Product Description

This college text teaches the rules of Ancient Rhetoric through modern examples from The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, the 2011 Republican Primaries, and unsolved crimes. Three premises underlie the book: that no one thinks or writes without reference to their culture; that humans disagree often and for good reasons; and lastly that people compose because they want to affect the course of events. Appealing to ancient rhetoricians, the focus on composing---invention, arrangement, style, memory, and delivery---shows that rhetoric, as it was practiced and taught by the ancients, was an intrinsic part of daily life and of communal discourse about current events. Students will learn to develop productive arguments and analyze other's rhetoric in a number of situational examples. Exercises are included at the end of each chapter. 391 pages, hardcover. College/Advanced high school class.

Please Note: This is a freshman-level college text designed to be taught by a teacher or professor with knowledge of the subject. It could also be used for high school seniors, but homeschoolers should be aware that currently there is not a published instructor's guide available, nor answers/evaluation key to the exercises.
