I absolutely love this curriculum! It's very well thought through and very interesting to use. The different styles of learning are covered and explored. The audio discs are entertaining and informative. My children and I have enjoyed using it this past year and look forward to continuing with this curriculum.
My son loves this series. He wants to read the book and listen to the cd's even in his free time. I love it, too. I had searched for years (literally) for a book like this one: Christ-centered, Christ-honoring, fun, well done, complete History of the world. The only drawback is preparation time: because it is written mainly for schools, the teacher is assumed to have enough time to prepare lots of fun stuff. Oh, and customer after-service is not good. But overall, I just wish I had known about it long before I did.
Although I like history told as His (God's) story and this curriculum does well at using the Bible as the authoritative starting point, the teacher is left to do much research on their own to fill in the gaps (what was Egyptian life and culture like when Abraham, Joseph, and Moses lived? What was Jericho like? What records do we have of their entry? Are their any diagrams, photos... available?). Accepted chronology should be presented first to provide a framework to hang new learning on. Additional information needs to be given on the secular and conflicting viewpoints in order to understand the truth of the creationist viewpoint. The CDs present good information (particularly if you want to be an archeologist), but are hard to follow. A text outline may be helpful to follow what are the important points she is making.
Would be good to have woven and integrated through the text specific Bible passages to read at what point to allow His story to flow... when to listen to which disc --rather than indicating listening to them all at once. ) Although there are good project selections given, most need a bit more direction on how to do them, find the needed information... Teacher has to do a lot to make the projects doable for the students and he/she may lack time (especially if homeschooling and having lots of subjects and levels to prepare for). Basically, to have the curriculum do more in a very organized and directed manner so that the teacher does not have to do so much preparation and to make it more easily understandable to the students.
When I began teaching this subject to my 8th grader, I got so excited! I was never taught the creation side in PS, and I feel I am learning so much by teaching my daughter through this curriculum! My dd even said she likes "how she explains things." I love how all the learning styles are covered because it is helping me distinguish which style my kids are! I think every history program should use this either as a supplement or a full curriculum so our kids get the REAL teaching of how our earth began...
