We have used other grammar curricula, but Analytical Grammar is by far the best. It is not an introductory course, though! They get right into sentence diagramming early on. It says it is for grades 6 and up, and is designed to be done in three years. My 10th grader had already done other grammar programs and had a good foundation, but I wanted him to get grammar down rock solid, particularly in preparation for the PSAT, SAT and advanced Worldviews writing assignments. We did the whole book in about 7 months. I say "we" because the parent-teacher is highly advised to check work along side the student. We actually had fun with it and enjoyed it. And he learned to enjoy and appreciate the purpose for sentence diagramming! For some of the lessons, he did only one or two out four assignments, if it was very basic and easy for him, so this helped get through it more quickly. I will now have him do the A.G. high school reinforcement booklets through the rest of high school. I also plan to use the A.G. curriculum for my younger child at the recommended pace of 2-3 years.
I have been looking for a good grammar program for a couple of years now. One that was very comprehensive, yet not full of busy work. This was recommended by a couple of moms at our local homeschool consignment store. We have been very pleased. The kids are enjoying their work and not complaining. This is a thorough program which will give them a good foundation for life.
My teen boys are enjoying this grammar program. Yes, I know, a miracle! The program is easy to understand and yet challenging. Through the years, I have assigned "classics" for reading and neglected formal grammar lessons. I am so glad to have come across this program. We are laughing together as we work through the assignments. If you were like me and have delayed teaching grammar, this program is the answer.
