After completing a Master's in Creative Writing and working as an English professor in Ohio, Bethany Pierce now lives with her husband in Charlottesville, Virginia, where she works at an art studio and continues to write. Her first book, Feeling for Bones, was one of Publisher's Weekly's Best Books of 2007.

The story rambles. I found this book very uninteresting and the story jumps back and forth in time. It also lacks cohesion. There is a lot of detail that is really not necessary, such as parts of stories written by the main character. August 6, 2012

Creative Viewpoint After reading some of the reviews I was a little worried I wouldn't like this book, but once I started it I found Amy Inspired to be a worthwhile read. Bethany Pierce addressed the temptations and questions some people face in their Christian walk. Some of these issues are not wrapped up in a pretty bow and addressed in a way other Christian authors do it, so it gives the reader a new taste and challenge to think for yourself. The writing style is unique in a way that makes you think she is jumping a round in an unrelated mix of stories, but it all comes back together to show how the main character got to where she is in the end. The dynamics of Amy's family brought humor to the story, and the resistance of Zoe, Amy's housemate, to just go with the flow encourages the reader to consider why you like and do what you do. The book is not preachy and a little subtle about Christian values, but over all it encourages believers to step out in faith, trust God, and share it with others. July 15, 2012

Follow Amy's choice between comfort & convictions Post-it's, and Schedules, and Lists, Oh my! Such is Amy's life. There is no pleasure. No fun. No leap of faith. It's all comfortable. A comfortable boyfriend - she doesn't love him but he's okay. A comfortable job - Amy left a teaching position she loved to go back to school and become a write somehow she just stayed at the school and began teaching. When will she go out on a limb and date the wrong guy? Will she stand firm and not date guys that don't believe in God? Will she gain some convictions? Amy knows what she wants: she wants to be married, she wants to be happy, and, above all, Amy wants to be a writer but how much is she willing to give to get those things? January 28, 2011

Could've been better... I received this book from Bethany House Publishers to review. This is the story of Amy, a young woman struggling through life, trying to make a living, publish her writing, and find love. She's teaching writing at the local college, living with the eccentric Zoe, and then meets Eli, who ends up becoming a third roommate. Amy wants to be loved, appreciated, and valued, but has been very discouraged by the events in her life. Eli seems to be the one person who accepts and believes in her. My thoughts on this story...well, honestly, it was my least favorite book of the three I received to review. I'm a pretty conservative reader, and the several references to underclothes, the shape of people's bodies, etc. was a little uncomfortable for me. Beyond that, I was most concerned about the way Amy, and other characters, defined their faith. Amy would describe her faith in the Lord...but I never felt that her faith was clearly defined. The same went for her friends. Her friends made choices that were contrary to the Lord's teaching, yet they were described as having faith in Him. And that all seemed ok, according to the book. Kind of like a just-do-what-you-can kind of faith, and it'll be ok. One thing I did like about the book was that there was some humor and the references to popular culture were very easy to relate to. Overall, I don't think I would recommend this one for the church library. It was interesting, at times entertaining, kind of sad and depressing quite often, and a little confusing if you don't have a good understanding of doctrine/faith in the Lord. December 1, 2010
