A picture of Christ and the church . . . The parallel of a husband perusing his wayward bride and laying his life down as Christ did for the church . . . This movie encouraged me about Gods deep love for us . . .

Excellent Movie depicting God's Unconditional Love
When I first watched this film I was so impressed I showed it the next day in a small house church setting. They all LOVED it. It is the type of movie you can watch over and over, and enjoy and learn from each time. At first I thought jumping between the two stories lines would weaken the film. But the modern day youth leader's explanation of the Hosea's love for Gomer is really powerful in explaining God's unconditional love for us. I was surprised at the comments by some of "slow" and "cheesy". I thought every aspect of the movie to be of pretty high quality. This gets on my "best of the best" as it is comparable to Sheffey, Time Changers; Faith like Potatoes, and Fireproof.

God's Love shown quite beautifully
This is a lovely, slow paced, but relevant movie that illustrates the Agape love of God. The story is quite simple; a youth leader and his wife take a group of teens on a camp out for fellowship, fun, and hopefully to learn more about God. Sean Astin and Erin Bethea play the couple, doing an ok job in their roles, guiding this small group of teens out in the woods. The teens are portrayed in a somewhat stereotypical way, but it doesn't take away from the story. The main conflict is between the two girls, Carrie and Ashley. Carrie is judgmental of Ashley because she thinks she's superficial while Ashley just wants to be left alone due to her own troubles. A small incident pushes Carrie to anger and moves the leader Stuart (Astin) to share the OT Biblical story of Hosea. This is where the movie takes off as we see the story of Hosea played out before our eyes. We see a prophet serious about warning an apathetic Israel about judgment to come while at the same time trying to love his wife Gomer who has an unfaithful heart. What we see is a story of a love so deep, beyond feelings and not deserved, that we truly see a picture of God's love for the nation of Israel as well as Jesus Christ's love for the church. The final scene of redemption in the Hosea story brought me and my wife to tears. Yes, this isn't a perfect movie, but it is done with loving intent of illustrating God's love in a way we can see tangibly from the scriptures. Also, Astin's character tries to engage the kids to read their Bibles and their initial lack of interest should be a wake up call because many in youth groups probably react the same way about reading God's word. I enjoyed this little movie and would recommend it, particularly for the message of the Hosea story.

Not a good buy
Maybe good for a small group study, but not really a good movie at all. poor production values, poor acting, poor make up, poor script... reminded me of a cheesy movie shown at an outreach to people not yet saved who then walk away still unsaved because the movie was bad.
