Students begin by learning short vowels and consonants, before moving on to consonant blends that teach final blends first, and then initial blends. Finally, students learn long vowels along with the many forms in which they occur. Moving from simple to complex through practice and drill exercises, students will build competency and skill, increasing self-confidence.
The alphabet is taught visually and orally through having children repeat the letters as the teacher points to them, as well as through the integration of kinesthetic activities. The black-and-white hand-lettered pages are designed to teach children with minimal distraction.
A scripted example lesson provides a format and example for teachers to follow as the work their way through the lesson; short lesson instructions (approximately 1-7 sentences) are provided for each lesson in the back. An order of lessons, list of common English spelling forms, and pre-reading alphabet exercises are also included. 168 pages, comb-binding, softcover with plastic-protector cover. Grade K & up. The included CD-ROM edition of Samuel Blumenfeld's Alpha Phonics: A Primer for Beginning Readers combines every aspect of Alpha Phonics with the advantages of a computer-based course. Each of the 128 lessons in the book are reproduced on the CD-ROM exactly as they appear in the book; both spoken and printed instructions are included, and lessons do not require use of the keyboard-just the mouse! A Teacher/Student screen includes a sidebar for navigation and instructions and allows you to go to any lesson in the program; Student screens feature the lesson in extra large type without any distractions.

Doodle5 Stars Out Of 5Loved this!August 19, 2016DoodleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Starting off, I purchased a bright, fun phonics program and thought surely it would be a good fit for my very creative kiddo. For some reason my son did NOT do well with it. It was distracting, busy, and worst of all, I felt like he was using the pictures to figure out how to read. I asked for suggestions and someone recommended this. I was skeptical, but ordered it. THIS WAS PERFECT! The black and white, short lessons, ease of teaching, and flexibility made this a great fit for us. My son did not get overwhelmed and it allowed me to do more or less depending on our schedule. We primarily used a magna-doodle board and I would introduce the new concept in the daily lesson. Then I would write a word, or later, sentence. Many times I would have him read the word and I would make up a silly sentence involving it, or we would draw a picture after he had read it- just a short, silly doodle, which he found really fun. Or he would use the magnetic stamps on a second board when he got a word right. We could do games with them if I felt creative, have him practice writing the words, turn the sentences into a book which he could illustrate, or simply read through the new words in the book when we were needing more ease. I loved how it was plain and simple- and he was reading with fluency and ease about 2/3 of the way through the book! Like, the first book he picked up and read had 50 pages with a paragraph on every other page. I was floored! This really worked and wasn't filled with fancy instructions or bells and whistles. Also I liked how it wasn't heavy on rules. It would introduce the concept and rule briefly, but not go crazy (which I noticed some other friends struggling with in their own phonics programs with their kids). It builds confidence quickly and really is a practical, thorough, and fantastic book. Great value. I did not know there were companion readers, which I think could have been helpful I'm sure, but I was able to open this up and do the lesson without any prep or creative energy if I didn't want to. I will be using this for our other kids for sure. Even if their learning styles are different, the plainness makes this very adaptable. I HIGHLY recommend it!
