Alaric's Song 4.3 5 7 7

Quite a shame . .this could have been a solid read You know this could have been like a good Linda Windsor but it didn't quite get there. For me this book focused too much on fysical aspects of being married. Instead it should have focused more on the relationship developing between Alaric and Helena. Poor character development: Alaric . .i couldn't quite figure out why Helena wanted Him and and the other way around. Helena's was deeply wounded by her father: i didn't quite get the feel from the character (in how she acted and spoke) that she was truly traumatised . .but perhaps i'm being to critical. I could name a few other things. If this book was truly inspired by the beauty and the beast, it missed the mark i believe. That story was all about relationships developing which made it possible for Belle to see trough the beast and see the man. My advise: if you haven't read the Linda Windsor books this might be a nice read, but if you have read those books this might fall flat in comparison. June 14, 2011

The feud between Merclif and Cardel has gone on for years. King Henry is tired of it and demands that Alaric, Baron Merclif, be wedded to Cardel's daughter Helena. Alaric doesn't see how he can bring an enemies daughter into his house but he really doesn't have a choice. Then Helena over hears her father discussing how they plan to overtake Merclif on their wedding night. Kill Alraric and herself. Force Alaric's mother (Margaret) to marry him and take over Merclif. Helena knows she must tell Alaric but doesn't know if she can trust him. If he is able to stop the plan will he dissolve the marriage and send her back to Cardel? Will Helena ever overcome her fear and shame that her father inflicted on her? How can any man see past her hideous scars and truly love her for her?This was a beautiful tale told with a great deal of depth. Alaric was a wonderfully flawed hero. One who was strong both in body and character. He served his people well and they loved him with their full devotion. His biggest flaw was that he relied on his own strength and not the Lords. He had a need to control everything around him. Helena was a wonderful heroine. She was of a quiet spirit but had a strong inner strength. She was abused by her father and brothers. In fact her father cut her face which left a terrible scar. She knew that if her heavenly father was like her earthly father then surely He didn't love her.I loved the tale of these two main characters although the secondary characters were wonderful too. Alaric's mother, Margaret, was a very wise woman. One of great spiritual strength. Lord Robert Wyham, emissary for the King is also a very wise man who knows the Lord. He is immediately drawn to Margaret. There is also Damien Langston who used to work for Cardel and because of his love for Helena has protected her when he could. The romantic tension is wonderful. There was a lot of spiritual truths wrapped up in a story that you cannot put down. November 13, 2009

A few steamy romantic scenes keep me from recommending this to anybody who is not married. I found myself a bit embarrassed by them, but they didn't take away from the overall story. A very entertaining read, almost like a fairy tale for grown ups. May 18, 2009

Tell us a little about yourself. I'm a librarian and live with my husband and two teenage children in Southern California. I've published a non-fiction work, C.S. Lewis: A Reference Guide 1972-1988 (New York: G.K. Hall, 1993). Alarics Song is my first novel.

What was your motivation behind this project? I wanted to write the kind of historical romance novel that I enjoy reading--a fast paced story with a powerful and exciting romance between the heroine and the hero.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project? I hope that readers will enjoy the story and that the romance between Helena and Alaric will touch their hearts.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project? I was able to explore the nature of God's love for us and what it means to surrender our will to Him.
