5 Stars Out Of 5
March 15, 2013
This book kept me up a few nights. It was full of suspense from the first chapter on. That first chapter really put me in Alana's shoes and I was creeped out. Thank goodness for our hero Jaydin coming to the rescue, though. This is an edge of your seat romantic suspense that really showed how you can rely on your faith in God when things really look hopeless. However, I did not find this book preachy at all, their faith really was just how they lived. I look forward to reading more from this author.
Imagine being in the middle of your routine life when things take a scary turn and your life is in danger. This is exactly where Alana Candler finds herselfin the debut novel by Joanie Bruce: Alana Candler, Marked for Murder.
The tension is compounded through Alana's brother, Brad, the Police Chief who is short-staffed and struggling to solve a rash of murders. And a touch of romance is added through Brad's high school friend, Jaydn, who saves Alana from the first attack and cannot walk away from her in her time of need.
What I Liked
Mrs. Bruce is very good at dropping hints and twisting the story slightly, adding depth to the plot and the characters without taking away believability. I also found her to be very good at pacing the story, revealing more pieces without giving you full view of the puzzle.
The female lead, Alana, was developed well. She fought to maintain her faith and sanity, appropriately teetering on the brink of letting the stress of her situation overcome her yet faithfully returning to knowing God is her provision. She asked questions suitable to her situation, showing doubts common to many Christians who aren't fighting to stay alive.
Jaydn's conversion to Christianity felt a little rushed in some aspects, but not entirely. Mrs. Bruce did add in a great Christian housekeeper who I'm sure was sowing seeds throughout her time with her employer. And once someone realizes they believe in God, it's not a huge step to test the waters of trusting Him. Add in the stress of someone trying to kill the woman you are quickly falling in love with, and his change of heart isn't completely unbelievable.
The Bottom Line - 5 stars
Mrs. Bruce wrote a great story and I look forward to future books. If you like suspense novels, then you'll definitely want to give this one a try!
Alana Candlers, Marked for Murder by Joanie Bruce is a Christian suspense novel. This book is full of intrigue and an action packed plot that will keep you at the edge of your seat. Alana is trying to stay one step ahead of a killer but, it seems that at every turn he is there. Jaydn, a powerful business owner and friend to her Police Chief brother, saves Alana life and promises to protect her. Can she overlook her distaste for tyrant businessmen and see Jayden for who he really is? Will her strong faith keep her strong and bring Jayden to a relationship with God. This was the first book I have read by this author but it will not be the last. Her faith comes through her writing. I give her 5 stars for a great job.
Alana Candler, Marked for Murder appeals to readers on many different levels. It is a romance with an intriguing mystery plot that keeps you involved and reading past your bedtime. The Christian element is integral to the story and lifts you up even when you are biting your fingernails.
