Seventeen-year-old Molly Fisk does not go outside. She's ruled by anxiety and only feels safe in the tiny tourist-town museum she and her mother run and call home. Yearning to live free but unable to overcome deep wounds from her past, she stays hidden away. Then the chance arrival of a woman Molly knew six years ago changes everything.
Six years ago, newly single Claire Rodriguez was an empty shell. Only in the unique friendship she strikes up with a young girl--a silent girl who'll only talk to Claire--does she see the possibility of healing. But one day the girl and her mother vanish, their house abandoned. What happened that drove them away? And how can Claire now offer Molly the same chance at finding a life anew?
Gringa93Minneapolis, MN2 Stars Out Of 5Disjointed confusionDecember 10, 2012Gringa93Minneapolis, MNQuality: 2Value: 2Meets Expectations: 2Molly is a young girl who never ventures out of the safety of her home and place of work. Her home is attached to the wax museum where she works. Molly's mom is extremely protective of Molly. One day a woman from Molly's past comes into the museum with her family. They tour the museum and this sets off a series of events that no one seems to be prepared for.
This book is rather confusing. The chapters jump in time and the characters while they are introduced by name there isn't a good description to help the reader understand how these characters fit into the story. About half way through the book, the pieces start to fall into place and the fog starts to lift for the reader. The book comes to an abrupt end. I was just starting to enjoy these characters and there was no more writing.
While there were parts of this book that I enjoyed, the disjointed feeling I had while reading the story made it easy for me to delete this book from my collection.
My thanks go to Bethany books for providing me with this free e-book to read and review.
luv2readjenLisle, ILAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Because of my stroke, I sangOctober 22, 2012luv2readjenLisle, ILAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5There was a song, some years ago, that told the story of a little girl who hid behind a sofa while her parents killed each other, and she was comforted by Jesus. There was an element of that in this story of a little girl who found something she didn't know she needed. The way in which lives intertwine and intersect because God moves is always fascinating. This story goes much deeper than the song, and gives some pretty real insights into the way God works things that seem impossible for good.
My favorite line in the story is this: "I have no doubt I had that stroke so I could_sing to a woman I'd never met," which sums the basic premise of the book. God sometimes allows grief for His servants so they can be instruments of His mercy to someone else. In this story, the young girl who meets Jesus in distress, finds ways to keep following Him. Meanwhile, another woman also needs to remember Jesus in her distress, and the ways in which their lives meet is nothing short of miraculous in itself.
This story is layered and complex, and it unfolds in bits and pieces. The characters are rich and full, and their difficulties are challenging and real. The real faith of people who are wounded and how that manifests to people with no faith is honestly depicted. People who have not met Jesus have a hard time seeing Him even when those who have met Him repeatedly point Him out. The truth of it is, though, that when He is always working in our lives, providing evidences that He is real, that He is True, and that He loves us, the ability to disbelieve gets smaller. Once we do see Him, there are still days when life is hard - we live in a broken world - but He is the difference maker, the One who brings us together and allows our grief when it matters; He is the only One who can heal the hurts, calm the fears, and give us hope for the future.
