Publisher's Description

Was Paul the "second founder" of Christianity, striking off in directions Jesus never envisaged and teaching lessons Christ never endorsed? In this study Paul Barnett sets out to establish that, current theories aside, the apostle was a true missionary of Jesus, authentically extending the Lord's mission.

Arguing that Paul's own writings are uniquely supplemented by Luke's contemporaneously written narrative of the Acts of the Apostles, Barnett follows Paul on a decade of travels, examining him in his historical context and as revealed by his writings. Including maps of Paul's travels and five helpful appendixes, Paul: Missionary of Jesus is ideal for anyone interested in seeking out the historical truth of Christianity.

Author Bio

Paul Barnett is visiting fellow in ancient history at MacquarieUniversity, Sydney, Australia, and teaching fellow in biblicalstudies at Regent College, Vancouver, British Columbia.

Editorial Reviews

Martin Hengel
— University of Tübingen
"A well-written, concise introduction to Paul's activities as a missionary based on his letters and Luke's Acts of the Apostles. The book is full of valuable scholarly information and takes a special look at discussed Pauline problems."

D. A. Carson
— Trinity Evangelical Divinity School
"This wonderful book will certainly become auxiliary reading in the courses I teach on Acts and Paul. It puts together Acts and Paul's own writings in a fashion that is believable, attentive to the texts themselves, and full of life and vitality. Above all, Paul is simultaneously grounded in history and shown to be utterly captured by Christ and his gospel. Insights into the biblical material leap from many pages. I hope this volume will circulate widely."

Expository Times
"A significant volume that tackles many issues with incisive clarity and refreshing brevity. . . . A highly accessible introduction to some of the most important issues surrounding the study of Paul."

Review of Biblical Literature
"Paul Barnett’s book on the apostle Paul is a fine contribution to the literature. Barnett’s writing style is flowing, easy to follow, and often elegant. . . . This volume is extremely interesting."

Trinity Journal
"Student and scholar alike will benefit from this volume, particularly as a rich, yet readable introduction to Paul."

Scottish Bulletin of Evangelical Theology
"Undoubtedly, this will be a helpful resource for scholars, church leaders and all those interested in the life and ministry of Paul."

You have to read the Bible in the right historical context. this book is only $10.00 and it explains why Paul did not start his own religion, but was a follower of Jesus. It talks about the history of his missionary journeys which is something I know nothing about. Some people and religious have a negative view of Paul, but I think this book will set the record straight. You have to give it a shot because it only costs $10.00 which is a lot less than other books about Paul. CBD is so great how they make great resources available at affordable prices. Reading the Bible is essential, but I think every Christian should buy more books from CBD for his/her library to become super smart :)

As a seminary student, this work was required reading for my New Testament course. Though I didn't exactly enjoy reading it, it is a wealth of information. I didn't know what to expect, but it is certainly well-written.
