Publisher's DescriptionEighteen months after the tragic Grove Street Fire took the life of her husband, David, and four other heroic firefighters, Susan Marlowe thinks shes finally beginning to heal.
But then she discovers that David carried a secret to his grave. A secret that changes everything she thought their marriage had been. For the sake of their sons, can Susan forgive the unforgivable? Andrea Morley lost her closest friend in the fire. But she has no right to mourn him. Instead, she must forever grieve in silence—because her dearest friend was someone elses husband. Peter Brennan carries the weight of the world on his shoulders. As Hanover Falls fire chief, he was responsible for the brave firefighters who lost their lives that awful November night. Can he ever shake the feeling that he should have somehow prevented the tragedy? As he tries to rebuild the team at Clemens Countys Station 2, it seems he might find comfort in the arms of the woman he least expected. Author BioDeborah Raneys first novel, A Vow to Cherish, was awarded a Silver Angel from Excellence in Media and inspired the acclaimed World Wide Pictures film of the same title. Since then her books have won the RITA Award, the HOLT Medallion, and the National Readers Choice Award. Raney was also a finalist for the Christy Award. She and her husband, artist Ken Raney, make their home in their native Kansas.
Publisher's WeeklyIn this last book of her Hanover Falls series, Raney (A Vow to Cherish) continues delving into the citizenry of the Missouri town shaken by a devastating fire. The tragedy serves as the catalyst for the story line, which follows a cast of complex characters headed by Susan Marlowe, the operator of the homeless shelter destroyed by the fire, and Pete Brennan, the fire chief who lost five firefighters in the blaze. As the two struggle to move forward, they are thrust into circumstances to which many readers will relate, including family problems, personal secrets, and broken hearts. Raney avoids preaching at her audience. Instead, she deftly weaves a spiritual element that inspires through the actions of her characters. Readers who have been following the Hanover Falls saga will find continuing threads from the previous installments; however, the novel stands alone, so reading the other books is not necessary in order to enjoy this one. While the story is peppered with some implausible twists, it holds strong to its premise: an encouraging testimony to the power of forgiveness, not for the forgiven, but for the forgiver.
