Publisher's Description

The brave pioneers who made a life on the frontier were not only male—and they were not only white. The story of African-American women in the Old West is one that has largely gone untold--until now. The story of ten African-American women is reconstructed from historic documents found in century-old archives.

This is an excellent resource book for teens and young adults. The writing is easy to read and enjoyable. The photographs are awesome. Some boigraphical entries are longer than others and go into greater detail, but they all provide a starting point for further research and inquiry.I hope that we can help our young women by encouraging them to use these historical heroines as the subjects of their book reports; so often they only hear of Harriet Tubman and Rosa Parks. This book adds some needed expansion to the role that women of African descent have played in American history. This book showcases women who were left out of the main stream history books.
