Publisher's Description

Celebrate African American History Month with this annual collection of devotions. As you read through the month of February, you’ll be inspired and encouraged by meditations based on a Scripture passage and on African American history as well as a theme-based prayer.

These devotions increase a sense of knowledge and awareness of African American history, foster pride in that history and accomplishment, and strengthen personal and communal faith, hope, and commitment to a rich heritage and future.

The African American History Month devotion is perfect for church Bible study, opening meditations for meetings and events, and personal use.

Author Bio

The Rev. Dr. Sherry L. Daniels is a graduate Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas, Gammon Theological Seminary in Atlanta, Ga. where she received the M.Div. degree and Drew School of Theology in Madison, NJ where she completed a D.Min. in Urban Ministries and Urbanization.  Daniels graduated with “distinction” in her class of thirty—with Drew University noting that her final dissertation/project was completed in publishable form. She was ordained a deacon in 1990 and elder in 1992 in the Texas Annual Conference.

Daniels served in the Illinois Great Rivers Conference for three years as the director of Congregational Development.  “One of my great passions in ministry is having the opportunity to work with clergy and laity as they respond to their ‘call’ of ministry for their community.  Having the opportunity to give leadership to the Shalom Zone Ministry Initiative helped me to appreciate God's unique calling to local congregations. God has provided all of us with tremendous spiritual gifts and I am convinced that when we trust God and use our gifts faithfully, we will make a difference where we serve."  For Daniels the cutting edge in helping churches of all sizes embraces the use of technology in ministry.

In her current appointment she is serving as the senior pastor of Norfolk United Methodist Church in Norfolk Virginia.  Since July 2006, this congregation has increased significantly in average worship attendance, stewardship and new members.  Beginning January 2010, Norfolk UMC introduced a new Video Conferencing Prison Visitation Ministry, with the goal of serving at least 30 families per week.  The current economic climate is impacting the ability of families to visit with loved ones that are incarcerated and the average length of stay in Virginia is seven years.  This ministry is designed to keep families, especially children connected, which will increase self-image and self-awareness.

Daniels is a noted speaker and presenter. Throughout her ministry she has received a number of awards for community service and outstanding leadership.  When pushed however, Daniels acknowledges that her greatest contribution has been responding to the challenge of mentoring the next generation of leaders.  According to Daniels, “in order to mentor someone, you must be a lifelong learner.”

Dr. Daniels' family is primarily in Texas.   Dr. Daniels is a lifelong United Methodist and her home church is Trinity United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas.  Dr. Daniels has served as the Executive Director and Campus Minister at the Wesley Foundation-- Texas Southern University, Associate Council Director for Christian Education and Teaching Ministries for the Texas Annual Conference for eight years, and Senior Pastor of Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Northwest Houston.  Under Daniels’ leadership the church increased in average worship attendance, new members, and overall stewardship.

Beyond the church, Daniels is called upon to provide workshops, presentations and seminars to a variety of audiences.   In response to numerous requests, Dr. Daniels is the founder of a dynamic network of leaders, On Point Church Coaching and Consultation, Inc.—On Point uses state of the art online capabilities to train, equip, coach and resource church leaders and it’s primary goal is to help others find the strength to follow God’s Vision/Dream for their lives.  On Point is known for helping churches and leaders move to a higher level of ministry performance.
