It was nothing like I've ever read before. I found it to be creative and intriguing. There were twists and turns that I didn't expect and an interesting spiritual level.
Characters: The way the characters interacted and relied on each other was great. Every action by one character effected the actions of others. It all came together in an intricate web of character design.
Themes: This book has several themes in it including forgiveness, selfishness, and redemption. All of the themes work together to create a spiritual atmosphere in the story.
Emotion: There wasn't a lot of emotion in this book. It was very fast paced, but nothing that was engaging emotionally.
Overall: I really enjoyed this book. It was an extremely fast read while still having a lot of story to it. I had no idea what was going yo happen next and there were so many twists that kept me on my toes. The spiritual aspect wasn't overpowering or a turn off. It gave a new depth to the story line.

KavRCanadaGender: female5 Stars Out Of 5A Spellbinding TaleOctober 27, 2013KavRCanadaGender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Complex characters thrown into an equally complex plot creates an engrossing read that was hard to put down. Healy creates a desperate imagery with her words that brought a spine-tingling mood to my read. The supernatural element brings a subtle depth to this disaster story. Afloat is definitely a page-turner with all its twists and turns and also packs a few gasp-out-loud surprises that I did not see coming. A spellbinding tale you do not want to miss.
Jennifer M4 Stars Out Of 5August 10, 2013Jennifer MQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4Afloat, by Erin Healy, is a fictional story that combines faith, suspense, and the supernatural for what amounts to an overall fascinating book and interesting read.
Eagle's Talon is an architectural wonder: A series of beautiful condominiums floating on the Rondeau River. The project is still under construction, although some of the units are already complete and occupied. Danielle Clemente, a young single mother and the girlfriend of the owner, lives in one of those units with her five year old son. They both narrowly escape major injury in the beginning of the book, when what is presumed to be a sinkhole causes a piece of construction machinery to topple, tearing off the balcony to her apartment.
In what eventually becomes the perfect storm, torrential downpours flood the only way in and out of the cove, and Danielle and her son are trapped, adrift, along with a handful of other builders, investors, and residents. What follows is the story of their fight to survive, and the conflicts that arise when multiple personalities, opinions, and egos are thrown together in a crisis situation. Should they wait for rescue? Should they chance going out by boat?
Woven throughout the story are various pieces of back-story, particularly about Vance Nolan, the architect who designed the buildings. He's struggling with demons from his past, all of which he's forced to face as the group makes decisions about their survival. People's true characters come to light, in ways that are both shocking and poignant. More than anything else, I think this was a book about human nature, and about our relationships with ourselves, with our faith, and with others, especially during times of trial.
This was a gripping story, with plenty of unexpected plot twists to keep it interesting. The characters were real and well-drawn, and the element of wondering if they would survive kept me turning the pages. I did get a little bogged down in some of the details occasionally, and found myself skimming in certain sections, but it didn't detract from what was an overall enjoyable and fast-paced read.

I am always looking for new books and authors and this time I picked out one that I didn't like. I can usually picture the scenes in the book and visualize the people and places, but with "Afloat" I couldn't. This book was very confusing to me and I had to make myself finish it. This is the first book by Erin Healy that I have bought. I don't know if I will try another. Sorry for such a negative review, but that's how disappointed I was with this book.

Vance Nolan is the architect in charge of an unusual building project-- a group of floating houses. Most of the construction on the twelve apartment buildings is complete and some are occupied, when one day a disaster happens during construction. Just a little while later that day, a freak storm sweeps in and wreaks havoc on the home site, flooding the cove and trapping construction workers, investors, and residents on one of the floating homes. Cut off from the world without electricity, they must make the decision to try to escape or stay put.
Vance wants to stay and wait out the storm and for a possible rescue. His boss wants to build a raft and try to make it to the mainland. The others trapped with them in building 12 have to decide which of the two men to follow.
To some of the people, this seems like just a bad storm. But to those like the blind man who saw a vision or the few who were rescued from the water and saw floating lights beneath the water, this might be something much, much more than that.
I will admit, Afloat can be a little hard to get into at first. But just keep going, because it is an unusual story that will eventually catch you up and sweep you away.
