A truly classical way to teach writing

My third grader is using Imitation in Writing Aesop's Fables this year. I love that the fables are not modernized or "dumbed down" in any way. This program teaches that a systematic approach to learning in the classical way will bring about recognition, understanding and then mastery. I highly recommend this series.
My reluctant writer enjoys this program. We will be continuing with others in this series.
As we were drawing to the end of my son's 3rd grade year, I felt that he was lacking in writing skills. This was mostly due to he abhorrence of the physical act of writing, and he was feeling a bit lost on how to start. His grammar program had not addressed outlining skills and basically threw him into the deep end of the pool, so to speak, when it came to writing assignments. We both got frustrated with his writing assignments that required way too much hand holding on my part for him to complete. So, after wrapping up his grammar for the year (early because we skipped the writing chapters), I was on a quest for a more thorough writing curriculum to help fill in those gaps. We tried Winning with Writing, Writing with Ease and Imitation in Writing: Aesop's Fables. While each of these programs has it good points, we enjoyed Aesop the most. It teaches structure while allowing for creativity. My son also enjoys reading the fables and enjoys the re-writes because it does allow for him to be creative without floundering for ideas. He now thinks writing is FUN!
We are also able to use the read, define, outline, re-write skills taught here in other subjects (history and science) in a meaningful way. We alternate one week of a Fable with one week of a writing assignment in another subject such as Science or History. For example, he now knows to read a section in his science text, define the vocabulary words, outline the section and then re-write it in his own words. This is an excellent way to "learn" a new topic.
These books make a great addition to any grammar program but do not stand alone as a complete Language Arts curriculum. I am online today purchasing the next book in this series which covers Fairy Tales.
We are using this for grade 3, for my 8yr. boy. (I also have a coloring book on Aesop's Fables that I previosly purchased, so my Pre-K boy participates too.)We have been using it for a couple of weeks, but so far the response has been great. Imitation in writing gives structure and guidelines on how to write, & still lets us use our imagination. We've even invited another family to do the book with us so we have more stories to share. Having fun while learning, yeah!
