Intriguing Read for the Middle School Crowd
July 30, 2012
Scott Graham disappeared from the town of Odyssey one summer in a case the local police could never solve. Put simply, he ran into an unused train tunnel, and never ran out the other side. But now new evidence about Scott's disappearance has been discovered, and the evidence says Scott was sent as a messenger to another world held frozen in time, that he helped turn the hearts of the people of this world back to God, and that he is never coming back.
This novel took me a while to figure out exactly which Bible story it is based on. This is partly due to huge liberties taken with the story line and the emphasis on the use and abuse of power, an element not usually emphasized in the story of Elijah. But it is an interesting interpretation, and very entertaining.
Note: These books are designed to be read and discussed with adults, and compared to the Bible. Doing so provides an excellent introduction into literature analysis and the study of Biblical commentary. A failure to do so may leave some readers wondering where in the Bible giant clocks explode.
Highly recommended, both on its own and as part of this excellent series.
Scott Graham is running through an old railroad tunnel when he suddenly finds himself in another world where time has stopped and nothing grows. The crops won't grow and the fruit trees are not able to produce any fruit. People haven't changed in three years! The people who were sick three years ago can't get better, and those who weren't sick cannot get sick. Draven, the voice for the Unseen One, takes Scott under his wing and Scott must learn from this daring prophet, Draven, who willingly takes a stand that affects the whole nation.
This story follows the Biblical account of Elijah, telling the story from a kid's perspective. Tis s the Fifth book in the Passages series which transports kids from Odyssey into the land of Marus and its surrounding countries. Marus is a fictional world where two moons light the night sky, and their history is parallel to that of the Old Testament. This is a great book for kids and adults alike. It would be a great book to read together as a family.
Draven's Defiance is the fifth book in the Passages series. In this installment of the Passages series a boy suddenly finds himself in a different world. This book is based off of the Bible story of Elijah. If your a fan of Adventures in Odyssey you'll love this book.
