Kate O'Connell heads to Michigan, with Anders and Erik at her side, to see her second cousin Megen. She hears two men talking about a hidden treasure and they plan to follow Kate and the boys to it. The next day the three-some arrive at Red Jacket, the hometown of Kate's cousin Megen. She looks for her Uncle Casey, but finds out her uncle was not able to pick them up and sent Megen and Willie, the stable-boy, to pick them up. When Kate meets Megen, she finds out that her cousin is blind from a deadly accident from three years earlier. After a few days of living with Kate's cousin O'Connell's, Kate and Megen find coded messages around the Mitchell's mansion. They soon find out about the hidden treasure and the story behind it. Kate finds the map, but someone was watching, and stole it again. Kate, Erik, Anders, Willie, and Megen head to the mine where Willie's uncle works. When they are on the ninth level, rocks cave in and Kate and Megen are all alone. Kate doesn't know if the rest are alive or dead. Will Kate and Megen be able to find their way out of the mine, and keep their trust in God to protect them...and the others?

Lois Walfrid Johnson is my favorite teen/preteen author. God has gifted this woman incredibly and she uses her gift for His glory. She has a riveting writing style that makes her books hard to set down. I reread the Northwoods Adventure series a couple years ago just for fun and found them just as captivating as when I first read them over 15 years ago. Young women and men alike can relate to the spiritual struggles of her characters and it serves to help ground them in their own faith. I give her books as gifts to the young people I work with and they love them! The other day a mother told me her daughter kept reading one of Johnson's books instead of doing her work.
