I am a licensed therapist (18 years) and a Christian (32 years). I have worked with a number of people over the years that have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. It is true; some ADD/ADHD behaviors are simply about lack of discipline. However, many of them are undoubtedly attributed to problems with biology/physiology, as evidenced by the fact that when the diet and health habits change, so does behavior! In my opinion, making a blanket statement that suggests that ADD/ADHD is sinful behavior is unconscionable and irresponsible. Stating that ADD/ADHD is born out of sin is like saying that major physical diseases, like multiple cancers, are caused by sin! How much better off would we all be if we helped those who struggle with deficit areas of behavior (like encouraging stronger parenting skills and appropriate behavior in children) than to simply "throw stones" by calling certain disorders manifestations of sin. I am not trying to absolve people of personal responsibility and obedience to God and His word, I am simply stating that it seems that we do more harm than good by indicting someone with the label of sinner than by looking at the possibility that there are bona fide disorders, both physical and mental that have more to do with being in a human body than with being a sinner. Those in the mental health community are not looking to the ADD/ADHD diagnosis as a label to "excuse" behavior as the authors suggest, but rather look to the series of diagnostic behaviors as a way of better understanding overall behavior. When we better understand the behaviors we can then treat the condition and help the person to gain better self-control over their own life, character, and personality. If I may be so bold, I would encourage the authors of this book to handle the topic of mental health issues with a bit more compassion and understanding than has been demonstrated in their writings. After all, isnt that the model of behavior toward one another that Jesus gave us?
