Addiction and Grace offers an inspiring and hopefilled vision for those who desire to explore the mystery of who and what they really are. May examines the "processes of attachment" that lead to addiction and describes the relationship between addiction and spiritual awareness. He also details the various addictions from which we can suffer, not only to substances like alcohol and drugs, but to work, sex, performance, responsibility, and intimacy.
Drawing on his experience as a psychiatrist working with the chemically dependent, May emphasizes that addiction represents an attempt to assert complete control over our lives. Addiction and Grace is a compassionate and wise treatment of a topic of major concern in these most addictive of times, one that can provide a critical yet hopeful guide to a place of freedom based on contemplative spirituality.
Gerald G. May, M.D. (1940-2005), practiced medicine and psychiatry for twenty-five years before becoming a senior fellow in contemplative theology and psychology at the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation in Bethesda, Maryland. He was the author of many books and articles blending spirituality and psychology, including Addiction and Grace, Care of Mind/Care of Spirit, Will and Spirit, and The Dark Night of the Soul.
pete4 Stars Out Of 5August 1, 2010peteIll be the first to admit it that people have the tendency to try and fix everything ourselves thinking we have all the answers. After reading this excellent yet slightly abstruse book I was spiritually awakened to realize that I don't have the power on my own! Only God is All Love and All Powerful! I'm a sinner, always will be, but God's grace has set me free from my heroin addiction and I feel so liberated. Amen!

Christina Paul4 Stars Out Of 5July 14, 2008Christina PaulThis book was one of the most helpful I've read, it really helps you understand the nature of addiction and its self-defeating cycles. It talks about how it affects you in different ways; physically, emotionally, spiritually, etc. It dissects matters of the heart and shows how addiction is not restricted to drugs and alcohol only.
