Product Description

In Acts professor of practical theology aT Reformed Theological Seminary Derek Thomas examines the book of Acts section by section. He highlights specific points of historical and theological interest with lucidity, succinctness, and thoroughness. Thomas' writing brings the history of the early church to life through unpacking their teaching and charting the events that so defined the apostolic church and their faithful witness to Christ. As an expository commentary Thomas' main goal is to highlight the major aspects of the biblical text that teach us about Christ while also applying Scripture to our lives.

About the Series:

The Reformed Expository Commentary focuses on the English rendering of the biblical text, and thus does not address concerns of the original language or other academic technicalities. Nonetheless it is the product of rigorous work with the biblical text in its original languages. Each volume proceeds section-by-section and focuses on the narrative flow of the biblical book. Moreover, it while draws out significant points or theological emphases in the text, and then applies them to the daily life of the Christian.

The various points addressed range between historical events taking place within a books narrative, or upon significant doctrinal statements that are made. The application or "guidance" section as the series calls it rounds out each of the particular emphases from the text making it a complete expository volume. Each commentary approaches the text from a Reformed theological perspective, and can be used profitably for either study or devotion.

Editorial Reviews

"Somewhere along the way the idea developed that commentaries are supposed to be a resource, but are not supposed to be all that readable. Derek Thomas and his treatment of Acts defies convention. Here you have a tremendous resource for pastors and students. And here you have a most readable, insightful, and enjoyable book for all. Dr. Thomas writes with a theologian's acuity, a pastor's heart, and a fellow disciple's humility and dependence upon the Holy Spirit - all resulting in a great gift for the church."
"Biblically thorough, theologically accurate, pastorally sensitive--here is a rich feast set before God's people. As Derek Thomas feeds us from the book of Acts, not only do we find ourselves satisfied; we are compelled to love Jesus more today than we did yesterday. And isn't that the goal of all biblical preaching, writing, and living?"
"The church of the twenty-first century desperately needs to know her first-century history. With pastoral care and thoughtful scholarship, Thomas gets to the very heart of Acts as he helps to draw our hearts to the Holy Spirit as the main character of the book. This book rouses our hearts and lifts our eyes to look to the faithfulness of our triune and covenant God of history and eternity. Thomas beautifully provides the church of Christ with a much-needed resource for believers of all ages who desire to more fully know God’s sovereign history in the early church."
"The Book of Acts is a such an important book in so many ways: from seeing how the early church moved out of Palestine and reached out to Gentiles, to understanding basic principles of church life and practice. In this work, Derek Thomas opens up the book for readers in a way that only a preacher can; and, as a result, all Christians—from the finest preacher to the humblest student of the Bible—will find that they have a veritable gold mine in their hands."

    Derek W. H. Thomas

In Acts professor of Practical Theology and Reformed Theological Seminary Derek Thomas examines the book of Acts section by section highlighting specific points of historical and theological interest. Lucid, succinct, and eminently accessible, Thomas' writing brings the history of the early church to life through unpacking their teaching and charting the events that so defined the apostolic church and their faithful witness to Christ.

This is a great series. Derek Thomas is a great source of Biblical thought and understanding. I have enjoyed everything that Rev. Thomas has written. This is book is no exception. This was a great walk through a book of the Bible that details the start of the Christian Church since Jesus lived and died. It is a powerful reminder of the trials that these men went through and the place of woman in the church. It was a detailed walk through how the church was built upon Christ. It was exciting to turn the page to discover some forgotten and some new gems of the this book that Dr. Thomas brings out.
