Michael Phillips is one of the renowned Christian novelists of our time. He has penned sixty fiction titles of great variety—historical and contemporary; romance, mystery, and thriller. The breadth of Phillips’s audience is a testimony that his writing is universal in its appeal, with thought-provoking spiritual themes known as his “spiritual tunes.” Phillips’s name is often linked with Scotsman George MacDonald, the man whose books helped lead C.S. Lewis to Christianity. Along with his own writing, Phillips’s passion is to make the links between MacDonald and Lewis more widely known. Phillips and his wife, Judy, divide their time between homes in California and Scotland.
“Michael Phillips has the unique ability to recreate not merely the feel but the impact of the classic George MacDonald novels. From Across the Ancient Waters draws you into a world where engaging characters and spiritual insights merge to form a seamless tapestry.”
- Bodie and Brock Thoene, authors of the AD Chronicles and Beyond the Farthest Star
From Across The Ancient Waters keeps these characteristics alive. The young Percy, sent away to hopefully reform his bad ways, finds faith, friendship, and adventure in the Welsh countryside. The characters draw you in so that you feel the pangs of young love and the heartache of losing someone you care for. I was not ready for this story to end and am happy to know book two will be out in a few months. The only thing missing was a pronunciation key for the Welsh words; I’m a little rusty on my Welsh.

Wonderful, suspenseful book but the ending left too many loose ends and questions! The author tells you there are secrets and then he does not reveal them!
I am ordering book #2 right now because I have to know the outcome and what the secrets are!

I Could not wait to read the next book.
IreneUnited States5 Stars Out Of 5An excellent book that I will be reading again!June 4, 2012IreneUnited StatesQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This is another great book written by Michael Phillips. The particular book is the first in the new series The Green Hills of Snowdonia. I have to admit I had some late nights while reading this book. I did not want to put it down and walk back into reality! There is so much great detail in this story that you feel like you are right there with the characters.
The author does an excellent job at description and character development. How the settings are described helps you feel like you are right there! The two main characters in this book, Percy and Gwyneth both change and grow as their story progresses. You can read some books and not really see this but this author in this book does it flawlessly.
I liked the adventure, romance and drama found throughout the story. I especially look forward to reading the next in the series. I gave this book 5/5 stars as it is one of the best books I have read this year!
I would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for the copy of this book I enjoyed reading. I gave an honest review based on my opinion of what I read.

FayeAge: 18-24Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Biblically based tale with a classic liltFebruary 17, 2012FayeAge: 18-24Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5From Across the Ancient Waters reminded me of the Christian fiction written in the early 1900's, with its detailed descriptions and strong biblical foundation.
This book tells the tale of prodigal Percival "Percy" Drummond, the only son of a city vicar. He is sent to the country to live with his unbelieving cousins in the country. He is shocked at the way his cousins Florilyn and Courtenay treat they're parents, and slowly but surely he begins to turn back to the sound teachings of his parents. While visiting in Wales he meets the quietly charming, yet somewhat mysterious, Gwen. What will they find beneath the depths of the Ancient Waters?
As I mentioned briefly before, this book reminded me of the many wonderful classical Christian treasures written in years gone by, the way the lesson is taught and the attention to detail is nothing short of classic. I realized while reading this book that it is not for everyone and there were times when I felt like I was slogging through ridiculously meticulous descriptions, once I believe it took four pages to describe one house! So yes, it was a slow starter, but I believe that if you keep reading you will find a pearl hidden inside.
Another thing I liked about this book was how clean it was. Yes, there were some things that were alluded to, but only the barest minimum so that the reader knew something of what the situation was, and nothing more.
I loved watching as Percy, though a rebellious son himself, was able to be a shining light to others. The depth throughout the entire book of Percy's character, how he grew and changed throughout challenging circumstances and made living altering choices, was rich and well done.
One thing I might add is that this book was different from alot of other book by Mr. Phillips that I have read in the past, with more of a classical lilt to it, though there are many of his older books that I think would be more like From Across the Ancient Waters. I immensely enjoyed it's classic charm, and the style in which it is done, so different from the books on today's Christian fiction market. But overall I enjoyed almost every minute of it, and I recommend this as a book well worth reading.
Final Rating: 4.75 out of 5
I received this book from the publisher in return for an honest review. I was not required to give a postive review, but only to state my opinion respectfully. Thanks :)
