A splendid exploration of faith against great odds and love that endures years of disappointment.
Abraham and Sarah is a masterful historical drama from the moment that Abraham strides into the pagan temple to rescue Sarah. The couple set out in search of the blessings God had promised: abundant fertile land and decedents more plentiful than the stars.
But years of wandering bring the couple to Egypt where once again Abraham convinces Sarah that as sister and brother surely they will pass safely through the territory. But Pharaoh takes Sarah into his harem where she befriends Pharaoh's daughter, Hagar. Together the three are ordered to leave.
Years of barrenness have embittered Sarah and she hatches a plan: Hagar must become the vessel for the child God has promised. Ishmael is born to Hagar and so is jealousy born in Sarah's heart. But God had a plan and He was right all along. This miracle unfolds with Historical authenticity leaving the reader with a better understanding of the ancient world and the life-changing faith of Abraham and Sarah.
KimScottKentuckyAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5A remarkable storyJune 17, 2014KimScottKentuckyAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I enjoyed Abraham and Sarah by Roberta Kells Dorr it is fiction based on the biblical story. Reading the old bible story written in novel form really brings this old story to life in ways I haven't read it before. I was able to get a picture of how things might have been.
The work the women would have done. How extremely hard it must have been for Sarah to tell her husband to be with another woman so he could have a son. How heartbreaking it must have been for Hagar to watch this son calling Sarah his mother. I found myself feeling sad for both of these women.
I have to say I wasn't fond of Sarah being rescued from the pagan temple or that Hagar was the daughter of Pharaoh as I have never read that anywhere in the Bible. But do understand that the author used some liberties to write her story.
It is is a remarkable story all the same, which I do recommend just keep in mind if you choose to read that it is fiction based on biblical history.
I received a free copy of this book from Moody Publishers in exchange for my honest review rather it be good or bad. Thank you.
GraceAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5A Portrayal of the story of Abraham and SaraMay 12, 2014GraceAge: 45-54Gender: femaleThis author is one of the best biblical historical novelists of our time. She allows her readers to glean cultural wisdom that she has obtained from her studies of her years of living in the Middle East. This book did not disappoint. Although detailed in its characters, the story of Abraham and Sarah was told from a biblical and cultural point of view.
What I found most interesting and enlightening was the struggle Sarah had in having faith in Elohim, the Creator God. The gods of this age were numerous, and all of the characters, except for Abraham, struggled to believe in a God whom they could not see, hear, or touch, throughout most of the story.
I was also fascinated by the author's portrayal of the relationship between Hagar and Abraham. Hagar desired Abraham's love before becoming his wife and agreeing to bare the child she thought would be the answer to God's promise.
Although the biblical account is not as detailed or dramatic, I believe this book does hold true to the Bible's story of Abraham and Sarah. If you are a fan of this author or love historical fiction, as I do, you will want to read this book!
Amy CVAAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Abraham and SarahFebruary 28, 2014Amy CVAAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Abraham and Sarah is an amazing fictional account of the biblical story of Abraham and Sarah. It starts off explaining how they met and married. It explains the feelings and turmoil Sarah went through while she was unable to conceive a much wanted child. Also it tells of Abraham's emotions as he remains loyal to God.
I think this was a good read. Although, at times I really didn't like the betrayal of Sarah like did of Abraham. If you want to imagine a much detailed story of Abraham and Sarah, then this is a book for you. Recommended. 5 stars.
