Publisher's Description

A seven-day rainstorm is the least of the Laval family's problems, as a nationwide flu epidemic sends Rhoda to a hospital quarantine ward. With all communication disrupted, each family member thinks about the unthinkable.

Author/Artist Review

Tell us a little about yourself.   I am 39 years old, single, no kids. Except for two college Composition courses, I am a self- trained writer. It is the one and only real skill that I have, but God gave it to me for His glory. I don't think I could write a novel unless it had a strong Christian thought.

What was your motivation behind this project?   One thing I want to do with the "Thundermist" series is to show the world what God expects of a Christian family. American pop culture has been trashing the concept of the family up and down for far too long. Movies, TV "comedy" shows and comic strips invariably depict families in a negative light: 1) The fathers are incompetent boneheads, or missing altogether. 2) The mothers are the only sane people in the house (if they're even there at all). 3) The boys are dumb jocks, clumsy nerds, etc., and always pick on their sisters. (I used to think "Fox Trot" was a funny comic strip; now it's just "Jason vs. Paige," and it's actually disheartening.) 4) The girls are sassy-mouthed, dress immodestly, and are not the type one should bring home to meet the family. 5) The whole mess is sloppily tied together with one-liners and toilet jokes. Conversely, the Laval family is the exact opposite. The parents are wise and supportive. The children are attentive and obedient. Above all, they LOVE each other, and the only conflict comes from OUTSIDE the home. I want the world to know that the family MUST be this way, or our society is doomed.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?   One thing I hope to accomplish is to encourage children to raise their level of understanding. My readers often ask me, "What age level are you writing for?" I answer that I don't write that way. I simply develop the story, and write what I want. If a child does not understand something, I insist that he or she asks the parents or elders to explain it.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?   I try not to let other writers influence me. Quite the opposite: I'm trying to be different. As a writer, there are two things I hope to God I never do: 1) I will NOT imitate a particular style or genre, simply because it is "popular." If I had to do that, then I wouldn't be a "writer." I would be a Xerox machine. 2) I will NOT follow the advice in those "How To Sell What You Write" manuals. Part of being a writer is having the guts to write what YOU think is important for people to know. "Constructive criticism" is one thing, if the purpose is indeed to improve the artistic quality of the story; but I will not be a mind-slave of naysayers who criticize for purely subjective reasons. (i.e. "Your opinions are too strong.")

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:   I invite my readers to send in comments and questions. My e-mail address is in my latest book ("A Week Without Sunshine").
