A rich, heartwarming story about discovering God's love, acceptance, and healing--for even the most damaged hearts. It's 1917, and Samantha O'Brien, seventeen years old, runs away from Wisconsin to Minnesota to escape a drunkard father and broken home. She is accepted with open arms into the Klaassen family, German-Mennonites who show both love and patience to this lonely and defensive girl. Samantha's fractured childhood and its devastating losses make it very difficult for her to accept the Klaassen's genuine care and concern, because she's sure nobody can love the likes of her. But with prayer, time and love, the family--including the young and handsome Adam Klaassen--begins to break through Samantha's walls. Customer Reviews "Kim Vogel Sawyer knows her subject well--no surprise since this book is based on her family history. She has a gift for creating lovable, believable characters and bringing the past to life."
Bestselling, award-winning author Kim Vogel Sawyer wears many hats besides "writer." As a wife, mother, grandmother, and active participant in her church, her life is happily full. But Kim's passion lies in writing stories of hope that encourage her readers to place their lives in God's capable hands. An active speaking ministry assists her with her desire. Kim and her husband make their home on the beautiful plains of Kansas, the setting for many of Kim's novels. She is the author of more than twenty novels.
ColtonDixonfangirlAge: 18-24Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5BEST BOOK EVER!!!December 28, 2013ColtonDixonfangirlAge: 18-24Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This is by far my favorite book. After reading just a few short chapters, I could hardly put it down. Samantha is a 17 year old girl who feels broken, and unloved. Adam is a 20 year old boy, who loves to work his parents' farm, and is the nicest person someone could be. These author developed the characters very well, and wrote beautifully. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Carolyn JohnsonGolden Valley, MNAge: Over 65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5THIS IS A GREAT BOOK!March 3, 2012Carolyn JohnsonGolden Valley, MNAge: Over 65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This is a beautifully written, completely satisfying, and intensely inspirational book. I'd read only a couple of chapters when I didn't want to lay it down--I really wanted to know what happened to this very unfortunate young woman! The family she encounters in Mountain Lake in a most unusual manner is really delightful. Adam is a very loving, caring young man--a worthy example of a believer--who never lets us down, even when he is doing some suffering of his own. All the characters are memorable. This book provides a rich reading experience for anyone, not only for readers in Minnesota (as I am). I only wish I didn't have to wait until June for the next book in the trilogy! I'm so glad it's about Samantha's brother.
