This book was a wonderful surprise! I have read several books on wagon trains to the American west. This is my new favorite. It is well written -- the characters are lifelike, and the narrative is colorful. One scene in particular, which described a trip down dangerous white water rapids was especially exciting. Wish there was a sequel.

Having just read another very well written, couldn't put it down story of wagon trains heading west, I found this one to be less than gripping. Maybe without that comparison it could have rated better. It was still a nice, easy to read little story, certainly well researched as to dates and landmarks along the way from Missouri to Oregon in 1843. I don't think I've ever read a book with so much conversation - the story, the character development, nearly everything was portrayed in words spoken between characters, which meant it was never quite as deep as when such things are narrated. There were two very like-able leading ladies from two generations, making the book appealing to a wide age range of reader. It was an easy to read story.

Author/Artist Review

Author: june bryan belfie

Tell us a little about yourself.  I've always enjoyed writing, though only in the last five years have I made it a full-time endeavor. All my books are written from my Christian perspective and I hope to share with others the impact Christ makes on my life through my fiction. Living in the beautiful state of Pennsylvania, I've spent time with the Amish and have now expanded my writing to include novels about their lifestyle.

What was your motivation behind this project?  I've always been fascinated by the courage of our forefathers and wanted to share with others the experiences they endured during their trek across this great nation.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  I hope my readers will gain a greater understanding of the trials the pioneers faced and the reliance many of them had on God to help them through. Though our lives are far simpler physically, we too are faced with challenges. Placing our cares on God is just as important in our lives as it was for the early settlers.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  Though I expected to be impressed by the courage of the pioneers, I had not realized some of the challenges they faced crossing the Rockies. My family arrived in America in the 17th century, so it was a personal study as well as a business decision to write about this period in American history.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  I read many Christian authors and it's difficult to pinpoint who has had the greatest influence on my life. C. S. Lewis comes to mind, as well as Ravi Zacharias, Charles Colson, and Lynn Austin for fiction. The Bible is the paramount book for inspiration, which goes without saying.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  I immersed myself in the study of the 1843 emigration across the Oregon Trail. I read every journal and entry I could find until I felt I understood the impact of such an adventure on the lives of my characters. I became my heroine, and then I wrote.
