Good...but leaves a lot of questions unanswered
This movie has a lot of good qualities: a loving family focusing on both temporal and eternal priorities, answering the call of God, forsaking the world, and the joys of simple living. It featured beautiful scenery and images of happy children. In that regard, it was a wonderful movie. Our own family has purposefully chosen to live a "simpler-than-normal" life.
As a student of apologetics and theology, however, it left a lot of questions unanswered about this family's doctrine. I respect my brothers and sisters who practice some of the beliefs represented on this movie (we have freedom in Christ to do many different things) but any serious theologian would have to admit that these beliefs are NOT considered binding by all Believers. I enjoyed this movie because I consider that God has used these beliefs to prepare this family for their special mission; at the same time, I do not believe that the Bible teaches that all Christians should live without electricity, practice quiverfull, plain-dress, and certainly not observe Jewish rituals. I would hate for a new Christian or an unbeliever to get the idea that these are obligatory without searching the Scriptures for himself. We are to test all things by the Bible...and sometimes even the most sincere among us come up with very different answers.
I respect this family and admire their deep courage and faith. I admire them for their mission to Israel. I only wish the movie had really gotten to the "heart" of the family and the real core of their doctrine/denomination.

This film taught a lot about the relationship between a father and his sons. There are not very many films out there with this kind of favorable message. I thought it was interesting how the eldest son was the narrator. This film is a fascinating story about a dad that was committed to re-claiming his family, whatever it took.

A heart-warming family story illustrating the wondrous effects of living a life out from God's source. The impact it had on the family and on those with whom they came in contact is outstanding. The Waller's put first things first, and the fruit of their individual and corporate expression proves it.
