A Harvest of Hope is the sequel to the first book in the Blessings series titled, To Everything a Season. In both novels, readers will feel like it is the early 1900s in a small town called Blessing that started with some Norwegian immigrants who came to America. The adventure begins to really heighten in the story as the small town, though growing, is experiencing difficulties.

Different families produce, sell or market different products and life is precarious due to the hospital being new and not all equipment has been purchased. I loved how some of the natural remedies were relied upon and used when either medication ran out or none was available for the patient. The towns families and friendships are knit together and even when others arrive most are accepted by the majority of the town. The bank manager is a reflection of what happens when a heart becomes hard and has spiritually lost its way to God.

The difficulty of facing someone with the love of Christ when feelings are completely the opposite brings a refreshing reality to the characters. The internal conflicts, grief or joy, made it seem so real as I read the tale. I love how the doctors are both female, accredited from a Chicago hospital and also training nurses nearly done with their schooling. The townspeople fight to save lives, save their town and help those who lose so much in a fire. Romance blossoms and the characters are thankful when grief or anger could have so easily been chosen.

I dont want to give away what happens in either book, but what I can say is they were a blessing to read. I was able to relate to a couple of characters as they were so lifelike and their situations or reactions at times had my heart beating when the action was ramped up! Other times I could almost wipe away a tear at the sorrow that some felt or the hardships they faced when carving out a new life in Blessing. Dont pass up very well written and thought provoking tales sure to bless your heart!

I totally love the whole Blessing story - all 5 series that Lauraine has written, and I really look forward to the next book in this series. The series has so many godly insights and the characters are so realistic. I can't get enough of these stories. I would never get tired of her writing about these people.

A HARVEST OF HOPE Lauraine Snelling

We return to Blessings, North Dakota, a community founded on caring. We follow the Community as it draws or is it the Lord, those meant to be blessed by coming, and those meant to bless. Only in this Community everyone gets to Pitch and Bat, sooner or later.

Our Heroine returns to bless The Community with her Nurse-in-training skills. But she's already realized, she the one being blessed. Her exceptional training, true to the roots of historical Healing-those with the gift, are not limited to what they absorb based on current role expectations, is one example of a huge blessing she receives.

It's not a matter of who's the Doctor, the Nurse, etc., it'ts always about meeting the need of the Others in their beloved Community. Of course, our Blessings-born Hero, loves her, his Family, founders of Blessings, appreciate and adore her, without impending her independence and faithful commitment to her first-loves-her Family in Chicago, and God's call on her life.

It's a great read on how a rapidly growing Community strives and remains true to the their founding virtue. They know their gifts.

We will have to read the next book...or books-but I love the Heroine's independence, and how Blessings let's her be who God is calling her to be.

If you've ever been to North Dakota...or Texas, you'll find parts of the Spiritual gifts and the cultural support of the gifts maturing,in this book. If you're searching for your 'niche', this might help you find your 'True North".

A Harvest of Hope by Lauraine Snelling is the second book in her Song of Blessing series, but it's also the 19th book set by the Red River in Blessing, North Dakota. These books tell the story of this community from its beginning when Ingeborg Bjorklund arrived from Norway with her husband and a few friends. Now Ingeborg is a widow for the second time, her children are grown and married and raising children of their own, and the small settlement is growing into a sizable town. Immigrants are coming from all over the world seeking a better world for their families, and (most of) the people of Blessing are doing all they can to accommodate them.

In the first book of this series, Miriam Hastings came from Chicago to work as a nursing intern in the communitys hospital. Now Trygve Knutson is determined to convince her to stay permanently. But Miriam has plans for her life, plans to return to Chicago to work in the hospital there and to finish raising her five orphaned siblings. She would never have left them if the internship werent required for her education, but maybe, just maybe, the God she doesnt believe in has a plan for Miriamand her large family, a plan that required Miriam's presence in Blessing.

Ive read almost all of Snellings Red River/Blessing books and loved getting to read this latest update on the community. I like finding out what Ingeborg and the other Bjorklunds are up to in each book, what they are learning about God and community, what new experiments they are trying in order to make life better for all, and how they help each other through whatever trials come along. I also enjoy meeting the new characters that Snelling brings into each book and following their stories. Snellings on-going themes are progress, growth, faith, and community.

Fans of historical Christian fiction who are especially interested in immigration to America, westward expansion, and the technological advancement that went with it will enjoy this book. I thank Bethany House Publishers for sending me a complimentary copy in exchange for this honest review.
