With such quotes as "When filled with holy truth the mind rests" (Spurgeon), the author's own poems and words of encouragement, and with well-chosen scriptures, I was touched by the wisdom and love of God. I ordered more copies to give away, and I'll probably order more!

Her death was a surprise and Cheryl Ricker's little book offered comfort as I rode in the car to the service. When I planned to review this book I had no idea I was going to be in need of it. Two months later my father also passed away and this book, read in snippets when I needed to hear God's comfort, became a part of my quiet reading time. If you know someone who needs a friend in the storm they happen to be going through, this will make a wonderful and thoughtful gift.
(A free copy was provided to me by the publisher for review.)

Ricker's gift to compose delightful prose will touch and encourage the soul of any hurting individual. I don't know how anyone could give this beautiful book anything less than five stars. Although I'm not going through any overtly stressful events at the moment, this book brought me nearly to tears as I read each lovely poem (as if written from God's point of view) and the accompanying scripture and unique quote. Each page of this priceless little gem will bring peace and reassurance. I highly recommend it for anyone experiencing heartache, pain, loss, or suffering. Let the words speak to your spirit. You will definitely find refreshment and strength.

Tell us a little about yourself. I'm a prize-winning poet who resides in southeast Minnesota with my husband and two sons. Born and raised in Canada, I graduated from York University in Toronto with a degree in Creative Writing. In addition to writing, I like watercolor painting, acting, singing, and dancing around the house with my kids. They laugh at me because I like to write while walking on my treadmill. I've always been passionate about writing and drawing people closer to God. I'm overjoyed that God opened door after door so I could do both in the form of this life-changing Zondervan gift book!
What was your motivation behind this project? Five years ago I started writing poetry for a young lady who was dying of cancer. I entered her world and captured her raw emotions on paper as well as God's loving response to her pain. Once I saw how much it helped her and her husband, I wanted to help others. Having survived a lot of grief myself, I wanted to shed light on the difficult question: "Why would a good and loving God allow this bad thing to happen to His children?" Knowing that God's presence brings the ultimate comfort, I wanted readers to experience Him in a fresh way while reading. I also wanted to craft a gift book where thought-provoking quotes and Scripture promises combine with sensitive poetry to reach the mind, spirit and heart. A lot of times a greeting card doesn't quite cut it. I wanted to give something more. Something light 'n tight, but deep and meaningful. Life-changing!
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? By presenting over forty essential hope-related topics, I know readers will: Be at peace that God is helping their suffering loved ones, Learn to trust God and find inner healing, Be softened by Christs compelling explanations of life, Desire heaven, and be assured that its their eternal destination, and Enjoy a non-threatening gift they can easily share with others. Soothing words from Christs point of view dispel disillusionment, giving readers reason to trust Gods sovereignty, mystery, and perfect timing. When poetry is matched with the Bibles most comforting Scriptures, readers are splashed with reassuring truth and direction. The poetry and Scriptures are seamlessly interwoven with quotes from respected Christian leaders, surrounding readers with a cloud of witnesses on this healing journey that crescendos with the splendor of heaven.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? A Friend in the Storm has been therapeutic for me. As I've meditated on God's truth, powerful imagery, and soothing songs of hope, I've felt more peaceful about my day, more confident that no matter what happens, God will be there to strengthen and help me through.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? Im inspired by evangelists like Billy Graham. He doesnt care what others think or say about Him because Hes out to please the King of kings. Thats the kind of evangelist I want to be. A Friend in the Storm makes it easier for people to share their faith in an effective, but non-threatening way.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: I want readers to know that God hasnt forgotten them. He feels what they feel. Hes holding them. Hes not going to waste their pain. Hes crazy about them. Its probably best illustrated by the poem, You. You Youre forever on My mind And in your presence I rejoice; Singing out your name with angels, All your sweetness fills My voice. Keeping loved ones in My keeping, I embrace a constant calm. Whole and holy, I will hold you, ever-after in My palm.
