With his winsome style and customary mix of wit, wisdom, and warm devotion to his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, C. H. Spurgeon (1834-1892) explains and defends the Bible's teachings about the grace of God in the gospel. In so doing he helpfully answers several important questions, which young believers sometimes struggle with, such as: How did I become a Christian? Did God love me before I was born? What did Jesus accomplish by his death upon the cross? What can overcome the wickedness of my sinful heart? Will a true Christian persevere in faith? What is the best way to be happy as a Christian? Will the doctrines of grace encourage me to sin or to live a holy life to God's glory?

Several highly original comments and insights are featured, and it's small enough to always keep on hand as a hand-out. Small format, few pages...and, of course it's always nice to have a small offering from Spurgeon laying around when one needs a dose of truth!

Calvinism is biblical, and true to Scripture. "We love Him, because He first loved us".

AR Reid5 Stars Out Of 5February 16, 2010AR ReidYou can tell how Christians are divided on this topic by the ratings given in the two previous reviews. And because of this, you might think it is just an in-house squabble among people who really agree more than they disagree about what the Bible teaches concerning Gods sovereignty and human depravity-but it is not! And this book makes that very clear. If a person wants to honor God in his or her doctrinal studies, he/she must choose between two prevailing systems when interpreting the Bible. One, Arminianism, is man-centered and caters to mankinds bent toward self-sufficiency, especially in matters pertaining to salvation. The other, Calvinism, is God-centered and accepts the biblical axiom that God saves sinners who are by nature rebels, and who, if it wasnt for Gods common grace, would be somewhat like the devil. This is not a minor quarrel! It is the difference between two gospels. One is man-centered, and the other is God-centered, and Spurgeons book helps us see clearly which of the two the Bible teaches.
AR Reid5 Stars Out Of 5February 10, 2010AR ReidThis is a classic study by one of the greatest communicators in Christian history. Many Arminians are disappointed when they discover that C.H. Spurgeon was an unashamed Calvinist. And Spurgeon was a Calvinist because he was unashamed of the Biblical message of God's sovereignty and man's depravity. Spurgeon obviously understood what many Evangelicals do not, that the Gospel is God-centered, and no matter how much twisting and manipulating certain men attempt to impose on biblical texts, the Bible's Calvinistic message will remain the same--God is the savior! Thats a message Spurgeon was obviously excited about. A huge thanks goes out to Banner of Truth for another fine publication!
