Publisher's Description

In the shadow of the Mormon church, a 19th-century conspiracy is about to be shattered by a 21st-century forensic artist.

In 1857, a wagon train in Utah was assaulted by a group of militant Mormons calling themselves the Avenging Angels. One hundred and forty people were murdered, including unarmed men, women, and children. The Mountain Meadows Massacre remains controversial to this day—but the truth may be written on the skulls of the victims.

When renowned forensic artist Gwen Marcey is recruited to reconstruct the faces of recently unearthed victims at Mountain Meadows, she isn’t expecting more than an interesting gig . . . and a break from her own hectic life.

But when Gwen stumbles on the ritualized murder of a young college student, her work on the massacre takes on a terrifying new aspect, and research quickly becomes a race against modern-day fundamentalist terror.

As evidence of a cover-up mounts—a cover-up spanning the entire history of the Mormon church—Gwen finds herself in the crosshairs of a secret society bent on fulfilling prophecy and revenging old wrongs.

Can a forensic artist reconstruct two centuries of suppressed history . . . before it repeats itself?

In A Cry from the Dust, Carrie Stuart Parks utilizes her own background as a celebrated, FBI-trained forensic artist to blend fact and fiction into a stunning mystery.

"Parks’ fast-paced and suspenseful debut novel is an entertaining addition to the inspirational genre. Her writing is polished, and the research behind the novel brings credibility to the story . . . An excellent book that is sure to put Carrie Stuart Parks on readers’ radar." —RT Book Reviews, 4 stars

Editorial Reviews

“Besides having a resourceful and likable heroine, the book also features that rarest of characters: a villain you don’t see coming, but whom you hate with relish. Moreover, you think said villain’s crazy plans for world domination just might work. Let’s just say it’s amazing what some people think they can do with Semtex. A Cry from the Dust will keep you hoping, praying and guessing till the end.”
“Renowned forensic and fine artist Parks' action-packed and compelling tale of suspense is haunting in its intensity. Well researched and written in an almost journalistic style, this emotionally charged story is recommended for fans of Ted Dekker, Mary Higgins Clark, and historical suspense.”
“Parks, in her debut novel, has clearly done her research and never disappoints when it comes to crisp dialogue, characterization, or surprising twists and turns.”
“Parks’ fast-paced and suspenseful debut novel is an entertaining addition to the inspirational genre. Her writing is polished, and the research behind the novel brings credibility to the story.' '...an excellent book that is sure to put Carrie Stuart Parks on readers’ radar.”
“A unique novel of forensics and fanaticism. A good story on timely subjects well told. For me, these are the ingredients of a successful novel today and Carrie Stuart Parks has done just that.”

This is one of the best books I've ever read. It is extremely well written, kept me on the edge of my seat, suspenseful, and not at all predictable! I'm not a person that likes a lot of romance in the books I read; I prefer more of the actual storyline. When there were a couple indicators that something might possibly bloom between Gwen and the FBI agent, there were a few moments when I thought, "Not again." I was incredibly pleased when the author turned it around and put him in the place of "bad guy!" I loved the strength of the main character, Gwen Marcey, as I could relate to so much that she had been through. I too am a breast cancer survivor - twice, by the grace of God! I can't wait for her next book! Well done, Carrie Stuart Parks! Well done!

Carrie Stuart Parks in her new book, A Cry from the Dust Book One in the Gwen Marcey series published by Thomas Nelson introduces us to Gwen Marcey.

I think that one of the most difficult jobs out there is that involving forensics. I mean really you start out with practically nothing and you have to reconstruct faces or crime scenes. I suppose it takes a certain kind of individual to make this work. Certainly Gwen Marcey is one of those individuals. She starts out just trying to recreate what may have happened in 1857 and then gets pulled in to a contemporary murder which may connect to a secret society. This is hot stuff. A Cry from the Dust is a thriller, which simply means that Gwen is in grave danger from, practically, the beginning. Ms. Parks gives us a really complex mystery and sections of story that will chill you. A Cry from the Dust is full of twists and turns, with a few red herrings thrown in just to cause confusion. Gwen Marcey is warm and likable and we get engaged in her life. This is an exciting book, extremely well paced and suspenseful. I am so looking forward to more Gwen Marcey stories.

To say this book is amazing would be an understatement. It is hard for me to believe that this was the first book penned by Ms. Parks. She wrote Gwen Marcey as such a super strong heroine that it was incredible. I didnt want to believe the bad guy was the bad guy, but this story was so cleverly and uniquely written it was not only believable, but you could actually see as the story neared the end what a perfect choice for the bad person was in A Cry in the Dust. Im ready for the second book in the Gwen Marcey Series.

Gwen Marcey is a forensic artist currently employed reconstructing three skulls, remnants of the 1857 Mountain Meadows Massacre in Utah. An act of vandalism and a ritualistic murder land Gwen in the middle of a criminal investigation, and she doesnt know who to trust: its Utah, the evidence points to a group of militant Mormonsit seems most local law enforcement officials are linked to the churchand no one believes Gwen.

A Cry from the Dust is a fascinating blend of fact and fiction. The Mountain Meadows Massacre, the murder of 120 men, women and children by members of the Mormon church, is a real historical event subject to a real-life cover-up. This makes it ideal as the basis for a suspenseful contemporary crime thriller, as the secrets from the past and the events of the present begin to intertwine in a fundamentalist conspiracy that could lead to another act of domestic terrorism on the anniversary of the Massacre: 11 September.

The plot is complex, with seemingly small events gradually growing in importance. Gwen is a fascinating character: a woman with an unusual and intriguing professional background combined with a difficult personal background (cancer, divorce and a rebellious teenage daughter) which means people think shes got mental health issues. Shes intelligent and brave, my favourite kind of heroine.

There was one thing about the writing that was slightly off, although I was more than half way through the novel before I worked out what it was. Most of the story is written in first person, from Gwens viewpoint, but there are occasional short scenes in third person viewpoint, from minor characters. Im not a fan of mixing first and third person viewpoints, and while Ive seen it done better Ive also seen a lot worse. This was the only glitch in an otherwise excellent novel, and I look forward to reading more from Carrie Stuart Parks.

This is an amazingly well written book for a debut effort. Being mentored by Frank Peretti has left its mark.

Parks is a forensic artist and she shows her expertise, deftly weaving fact and fiction in this novel. The main character is Gwen Marcey, recent divorce, mother of an acting out teen daughter, and world-renowned forensic artist. She is working at the Mountain Meadows Interpretive Center, overlooking the 1857 massacre site. She was reconstructing faces from the skulls of the only known survivors.

When a young woman faints at the sight of one of the heads Gwen has crafted, the mystery of what really happened to Joseph Smith begins. Before it is all over, people will be murdered, Gwen will be held captive by a fundamentalist offshoot of the LDS, and the lives of hundreds of people will be in danger.

This is a well crafted novel. I really liked Gwen. She is a gutsy woman. Her life has just been turned upside down and yet she perseveres. Life is tough for her but she keeps going. Just when she thinks she has FBI protection, she is forced to find her own way out of trouble. The suspense is nearly continuous and is well plotted.

Parks shares how she came to write this novel in an Author Note. She herself is a breast-cancer survivor, forensic artist, and Great Pyrenees owner, as is Gwen. Seeing an article on the Internet about a Le Fort fracture found on Joseph Smith's skull set her creative juices flowing. Further research piqued her interest and a vague idea took shape. The result is a compelling novel.

I really liked this novel. I hope it is merely the first in a long line of great novels from this author.

I received a complimentary egalley of this novel from the publisher for the purpose of an independent and honest review.
