To which man will she pledge her love and loyalty—for better or worse, until death they do part?

Author Bio

New York Times bestselling author, Wanda E. Brunstetter became fascinated with the Amish way of life when she first visited her husband's Mennonite relatives living in Pennsylvania. Wanda and her husband, Richard, live in Washington State but take every opportunity to visit Amish settlements throughout the States, where they have many Amish friends.

Publisher's Weekly

Amish specialist Brunstetter kicks off a new series set in Indiana Amish country. Loraine Miller's fiancé, Wayne Lambright, is crippled in the car accident that opens the novel. That initiates a tale of complications in their relationship. Wayne wants Loraine to be happy and doesn't believe a disabled man can meet her needs; Loraine doesn't understand the psychological complexities of Wayne's recovery. Into the tension between the two lovers comes Loraine's old boyfriend Jake, sorry for what he's lost and hoping to pick up the pieces. There's cooking, visiting and lots of neighborly support that fans of Brunstetter will appreciate as staples of Amish fiction. Since Loraine Miller also has a number of cousins introduced who face difficulties in the novel, the series setup is clear. Brunstetter could develop a better ear for dialogue, but she has a good ear for the distinctive Dietsch language of the Amish, sprinkling phrases of it into her characters' speech. Fans might enjoy reading this while the friendship bread is baking in the oven. (Mar.)Copyright 2009 Reed Business Information.

Editorial Reviews

The strong spiritual element is perfectly evidenced in the characters' consistent, loving Christian attitudes, even when it is met with hostility. Brunstetter kicks off the Indiana Cousins series and demonstrates how God can help flawed Christians deal with devastating situations.

Set amid a quaint Indiana Amish community, A Cousin's Promise, the first book in Wanda Brunstetter's new "Indiana Cousins" series (Barbour, p, $10.97, ISBN 9781602600607), captures the simple, traditional Amish way of life beautifully. With heartfelt love for and understanding of these people, Brunstetter teaches life lessons by intertwining the Amish lifestyle with a light romance story, while delineating the plot with a wide range of emotions and behavior generated from grief and loss--and the adverse effects it can have on even the closest relationships. A special section contains questions on the grieving process, relationship, and life lessons learned. Recommend A Cousin's Promise to teens and adults who enjoy a good love story with a message.

An excellent rendering of life taken out of our control and the dynamic results not only for individuals, but for a whole community.

Great book! I really enjoy Mrs. Brunstetter's novels and this one did not change my opinion at all! Character's were easy to empathize with. Story was not expected. FANTASTIC READ!

The first in the series "Indiana Cousins" and a great book as always when Wanda Brunstetter writes about the Amish...As you read this book, you hurt and even cry with these young people.

Author/Artist Review

Author: Wanda E. Brunstetter
Located in: Yakima, WA
Submitted: January 28, 2009

Tell us a little about yourself.  I began writing when I was a child and wrote my first poem about a moth. I've been writing ever since, and pretty much write all the time. My husband often teases me about writing myself notes during the night, which I sometimes can't decipher in the morning. My husband and I have two grown children and six beautiful grandchildren whom we love dearly.

What was your motivation behind this project?  I had read about a tragic accident that took place in another Amish community some time ago, and it got me to thinking about how that accident must have changed the lives of everyone involved. I wanted to show my readers that even when something like a terrible, crippling accident happens, God can use it for our good.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  I hope my readers will not only learn a lot about the Amish who live in northern Indiana, but will gain a better understanding of God and the ways He ministers to us during our time of need.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  I was especially impacted when I met, via e-mail, a very special woman who, like Wayne in my book, lost a leg. Hearing this woman's testimony, and being able to communicate with her as I wrote this book, was truly a blessing.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  The first person who influenced me to become an author was my second grade teacher, Mrs. Rueger. She encouraged me to keep trying and become the best that I could be. My Amish friends, Jake and Sara have become a huge inspiration to me in the last few years. Watching how they interact with their children and grandchildren has taught me so many things.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  I'd like my readers to know that, while the Amish may dress different than us, and live a more simple life, inside we are all much the same.
