Tell us a little about yourself. I am a graduate of Eastern Michigan University, majoring in English literature, and did postgraduate work at West Chester State University in Pennsylvania. After a rewarding six-year teaching and coaching career at the secondary level, I pursued fulltime Christian ministry. I served as a youth director with Youth For Christ in Michigan and Bitterroot Youth in Montana prior to my ordination as a pastor. I have served as a pastor and worship leader for the past 13 years in Darby, Montana, where I have also coached h.s. cross-country running for the past 7 years. Besides A CHOICE TO CHERISH, I have written 2 nonfiction books about Navy SEALs, as well as numerous articles for GROUP BOOKS, GROUP MAGAZINE, CAMPUS LIFE and others. In 1988, I received the prestigious MONTANA JEFFERSON AWARD for outstanding public service benefiting local communities. The award was presented by the governor and sponsored by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. In 1995, I preached at the New York City Marathon's worship service prior to the 26.2-mile race, which I also ran. I live with my wife, Sharon, and our 3 children in Montana's beautiful Bitterroot Valley. I am currently writing my 2nd Christian novel.
What was your motivation behind this project? I simply wanted to write a book that would greatly move people by its love, tenderness and compassion. I wanted to write something meaningful and important.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? It's my hope that others will discover that in the choices we make, we may indeed make choices to cherish - choices that cause us to grow and to become more Christlike. The themes of forgiveness, reconciliation, love and death, which are the themes of life for every one of us, are presented in such a way as to touch readers deeply. An editor at Broadman & Holman Publishers wrote, "I have never read a book by a male writer that has this much emotion in it." This is what I hope - that folks will be overcome by this story and that their lives will be transformed.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? I love the music and lyrics of Steven Curtis Chapman and Bob Carlisle. As their music moves me, so do I attempt to move readers through my writing. I also have been inspired by Payne Stewart, the professional golfer, who grew in his personal relationship with Jesus Christ over the last couple years of his life prior to his untimely death in an airplane crash. His wife's book about Payne is an inspiration to me.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: A CHOICE TO CHERISH is a book of deep emotion. I should know: I cried a million tears while writing it! My own heart was moved every day by the events of this story, and I believe readers will be blessed. The book is set during the Christmas holidays, making it a great gift book.
