"A Change of Fortune" is a romantic comedy set in 1880. The main characters were nice, interesting people with a good sense of humor. The hero, heroine, and friends end up in a series of silly situations during which they get to know and care about each other. There were some phrases that were too modern and some behavior that was improbable for the time (which created humor). But since it's a comedy, I don't tend to care.
There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this humorous novel.
This is my first book by Jen Turano, but it will not be my last. It was a fun book to read and I enjoyed the humor immensely. The dialog was great, though perhaps a bit modern in a place or two. The beginning and end of the book were very fast-moving and interesting. I thought the story bogged down a bit in the middle, but that could have been just me.
I love the characters. Both the major and many minor characters were interesting and seemed liked real people. They often reminded me of people I have met along my path in life, so I thought they were very relatable. The plotline was a little far-fetched in places, but that added to the fun of the novel, rather than detracting from it.
This is a story of the upper class in New York City in the 1880s. If youd like a fun, historical book, I recommend A Change of Fortune.
Ms. Eliza Sumner traveled from Britain to American, chasing a man who stole her family fortune. Eliza comes from an aristocratic family whose name has been tarnished by the man whom stole her fortune. She has disguised herself as an unattractive governess for Mrs. Watson in order to track this man in efforts to restore her familys name. In her efforts to do so, she would form an unlikely friendship with Ms. Agatha Watson, an older daughter of the Watsons. Their fates would soon be intertwined with those of Mr. Hamilton Beckett and his brother Zayne. The mysteries would begin overlapping leading their searches in similar directions. Will these cases bring them closer together or have their pasts made it so they truly can trust no one and only hinder each other?
Delightful read! I am thankful that this book is part of a series, because I cannot wait to read her next book. Gentleman of Her Dreams (the novella that starts this series) gives an amazing insight into this world and brings us into the opening of this book. This book dives right in and sets a fast pace right from the start. It is full of wit a charm with strong characters and a plot that does not disappoint.
