Hard to teach and difficult for kids to understand
January 5, 2013
I have been a Sunday School teacher for 10 years and this curriculum has been the most challenging to teach. Our church was drawn to this curriculum because it taught the same subject across all ages including adults and the online content for families. Unfortunately, many of the lessons feel as if they are trying to force topics that are more interesting to adults into a child format. The result is material that the is difficult to explain in an engaging manner.
We have been using this curriculum since September and I can't tell you the number of times that I have just thrown my hands up and used my old curriculum for the weekly Bible story instead. Several weeks I have just ditched the assigned topic completely and taught material that I know the kids would understand and enjoy more. There aren't enough GOOD games, craft projects or science experiments here. Many times the story lines are so similar from week to week that my 1st & 2nd graders can't tell the difference. I am spending at least 3 - 4 hours more per week preparing the lesson than I did last year. This is time I really don't have to spare right now. Save your teachers the aggravation and look elsewhere.
