Andreola Review

When I purchase books for our home school, they don't always end up to be books that have glossy, full-color pictures. Sometimes they are the more humble-looking ones. But very often, humble though they may appear, they possess a writing style capable of drawing my younger students into reading their assignments with satisfaction and enjoyment. Nature Readers are just this sort of book.

For example, in Nature Reader, Book 3 (average third grade reading level), a fisherman tells stories about Old King Crab, Mr. Barnacle and his son, and the flowers of the sea, which are all really animals. At the end of one chapter, describing the business of ants, the author writes, "This seems like a fairy tale, but it is quite true. All these things can be seen if you look out for them." Some questions in these readers give the student the opportunity for little tellings (narration). These are the type of prompts: Describe a barnacle fishing party. What can you tell me about giant beetles? Why is it so hard to pull a worm out of its hole? How do ants treat each other while they are at work?

Nature Reader, Book 4 has more creatures. The author shares surprising observations of baby hummingbird activity. Nature Reader, Book 5 describes the basic parts of the human body, as well as useful and varied parts of the bodies of animals.

We have been enjoying using this series, supplementing our science and nature studies by reading from them two times a week. The Nature Readers are meaty, interesting, and tailored to the child's reading level. They are also refreshing in that they give the glory of creation back to its Creator. I only wish that they were arranged slightly differently -- with the appropriate questions at the end of a day's worth of reading, instead of at the end of the particular section. I have to plan out in advance which questions are appropriate to ask for the day's assignment, since we are not using it as a read-aloud, but as an actual reader. The books also assume that the reader is in a temperate climate, calling different species of birds and animals "common," when they are completely uncommon to our desert surroundings. So, we have had to adapt the text, the suggestions for activities, and questions from time to time. Still, it is a very worthwhile series, and I recommend it.

We were thrilled with this entire series. My children read these when they were young as part of their schooling, then read them again just for the pleasure of it! There is a lot packed into these little stories. We learned much about nature and truly enjoyed it! Do not buy just one of these, buy the entire series. They make great read-alouds.
