Product Description

Though from the Beachy Amish herself, Marlena meets Ellie Bitner, an Old Order Amish mother who offers quilting and needlepoint classes. They soon form a bond, and Marlena is drawn into the circle of Ellie's family. Ellie's handsome cousin seems rather taken with Marlena, but after her recent breakup, she is cautious where her feelings are concerned.

But things begin to change when Ellie's young son Jacob discovers an older homeless man camped out in the nearby abandoned mill. Suffering from some cognitive disorder, the man has few prospects and fewer possessions--among them a small clutch of letters apparently from his own courting days. Could these letters be the key to the old man's identity? And can they bring healing and hope to Marlena and Ellie as well?

Publisher's Description

Marlena needed time to let things sink in. It was beyond her how all this could possibly work out--adding the care of an infant to her daily routine. Fortunately, it would just be until Luella returned home from the hospital and was stronger.
No more than a couple weeks, surely.

Marlena Wenger's life takes an unexpected turn on the day she learns she must care for her estranged sister's baby. Spending the summer in Brownstown, Pennsylvania, to assist her Mennonite grandmother, and miles from Marlena's Old Order Amish beau, she feels out of her element in nearly every respect. Yet Marlena determines to do her best and stay focused on her future, even as those hopes become drastically altered.

"The Love Letters" by Beverly Lewis is one of her best books. Marlena is an Old Order Amish raised young woman whose parents have left the church to join the Beachy Amish ( a modern group of Amish). Her Mennonite grandfather has recently died and she has gone to stay with her widowed grandmother. While there her sister (who has left all of the above groups) is in a car wreck leaving her infant daughter in Marlena's care. While in her new location she befriends her Old Order neighbors and their son with disabilities, Small Jay. Small Jay, or Jake, as he would rather be called, has recently befriended a homeless man who has trouble remembering even his name. There are many storylines interweaving and many faiths crossing in this novel. Marlena starts to question which road she would like to take in her religion. Where does she belong? Small Jay, whose father appears to have no use for him, starts to question his care and where he belongs as well. The homeless many has a mysterious bag of love letters who he may or may not be the recipient of. Is someone our there looking for him? To add to the reoccurring theme of where does one belong, Angela Rose, the tiny orphan, is looking for a place to belong as well, even if she doesn't know it.

I really liked this book. Lewis usually can't go wrong. She spent a little too much time in her past novels with the "tales of the missing kid"; but she has moved on with that and has developed a much more complex method of writing. I like the new path she is taking with her novels. Will continue to read more! I give it 4.5 stars. I received this book in exchange for an honest review from Bethany Publishers.

"Love Letters" by Beverly Lewis is an Amish Fiction book set in Pennsylvania, 1966. When Luella is involved in an accident Marlena Wenger's life is turned upside down. Marlena moves in with her grandmother to care for her sister's baby. Miles away from everything she holds dear, Marlena is determined to do her best and stay focused on her future, even if those hopes have been drastically changed.

"Love Letters" tells the story of the lives of two separate Amish families. I liked the way the author showed how God worked in their lives and each family relied on Him for help in any of the problems that they faced.

In the first family Marlena Wenger had many decisions to make. Many of those choices had hard sacrifices that she had to make, but it showed you how that by relying on Gods Grace everything will work out as it should according to God's will. In the second family Jake Bitner (known as small Jay) is lame, small and mentally delayed to some extent and how he wants to be some value to his family.

The author teaches us that it makes no difference who you are that by standing by your beliefs you can make a difference. I also found this book was full of love, dedication to family and to God and shows how by relying on these strengths they will bring meaning to your life.

It was a book that I really enjoyed reading as it kept your interest until the very end. It had you feeling the love and the pain that the families were going thorough. I would give this book two thumbs up.

I have read every one of Beverly Lewis's books about the Amish. This story keeps you interested until the very end. I was so absorbed in this book, it only took three partial days to finish. The other reviews go more deeply into the book, but I prefer to let the reader find all the details by reading the book. Some books drag along and are hard to finish (I'm an avid reader), this one carries you along with all the characters.

The lives of two families become intertwined through difficult, life-changing circumstances. Marlena is Old Order Amish, but influenced by her Mennonite grandmother's more liberal beliefs. Her grandmother's neighbors, the Bitners, are Old Order Amish and maintain their strict ways. Numerous levels of Amish and Mennonite beliefs are revealed in this poignant story, as well as troubled relationships and tragedy.

Several serious topics are broached throughout this heartrending story, involving death, severe memory loss, autism, marital discord, religious differences, broken relationships and fear of impending loss. Beverly Lewis has woven these issues into a gripping tale that continues to build as the story progresses. I was engrossed in this beautifully told story of the lives of some very special characters who truly touched my heart.

Characters became real people as this story progressed. Their challenges and experiences are relatable and believable, and I grew to love them all for their very special personalities. This is by far my favorite of Beverly Lewis' books. I felt that the depth of story was by far beyond past books. The blending of the lives of these characters and how they impacted one another is praiseworthy. I loved the book and highly recommend it!

The Love Letters was a wonderful book that I was unable to put down, it centers around a young girl Marlena Wenger who goes to spend the summer with her recently widowed grandmother to help her out. Shortly upon arriving at her grandmothers she finds out that her sister is in a terrible car accident and she has to take care of her niece until her sister is well again, which she is hoping is only for a few weeks. The story also centers around her grandmothers neighbors who are amish. The amish son is handicap and becomes friends with a homeless man who has dementia. It is a story that you will want to never end. A must read for the amish story lover.
