IF AT FIRST YOU SUCCEED, HEY, TRY AGAIN
There’s a reason the collegiate set and scores of millennials flock to David Crowder Band’s music: the six-piece modern worship act pushes the boundaries of sonic creativity, perhaps more than any other Christian artist. On the heels of the group’s GMA Music Award-winning CD, A Collision, comes that project’s truncated offspring, essentially a seven-song EP aptly titled B Collision because, in the words of Mr. Crowder, “B follows A.”
While a convincing argument could be made that every Crowder release is experimental at its core, B Collision
certainly fits alongside previous unconventional works such as The Lime CD and Sunsets & Sushi. And, while B Collision is by no means a remix record, the album largely showcases acoustic-based
versions of songs from the full-length
parent recording.
It’s important to point out that there’s no room to sit on the fence with Crowder’s latest endeavor. Either you’ll find it the most eclectic and clever piece of work to emanate from your iPod in recent memory, or you’ll absolutely hate it. That’s both the ingenious beauty and the incredible risk Crowder offers here; but it’s likely this virtuoso outfit will only broaden its already loyal fan base.
Listeners with an affinity for bluegrass will find much to appreciate (the album’s subtitle is The Eschatology of Bluegrass), as Crowder provides fresh and intimate renditions of the baker’s half-dozen selections. The bulk of the material was recorded in the barn behind Crowder’s house in Waco, Texas, where the band broke out banjos, violins and acoustic guitars to produce astonishingly simple constructions of songs such as “Beautiful Collision” and “Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven.” On standout track “Wholly Yours,” somehow, almost inexplicably, Crowder’s understated vocals coalesce with inconspicuous instrumentation and modest programming to create an enduringly serene experience.
Captured during a performance in Kansas, closing numbers “Be Lifted” and “I Saw the Light” feature special guests Robbie Seay Band and Shane & Shane. These tracks are far and away the most up-tempo of the set, and they serve notice to listeners that Crowder renders yet another collision worth encountering.

This acoustic/live spin off of A Collision is no disappointment. It is truly worth every penny. The jumpy piano and the acoustic guitars along with the masterful Beat that DCB fans are use to, add SO much to this EP. It opens with “Intro (I’ve had enough)” a tangy Bluegrass song. Awesome guitar which is so relevant in the rest of the album, great violin and the lyrics are so powerful. A Beautiful banjo/guitar spin is what you get for “Beautiful Collision-B Variant.” The acoustics are grand and David Crowder’s classic voice is amazing to say the least and the Banjo adds another great dimension to an already 3D song. “Wholly Yours” is so lively, worshipful and full of beat. Most think that when a song is acoustic it losses its flavor but not so with this song or any of the others, DCB makes sure of that. The full version of “Everybody Want to Go To Heaven” is full of power, in the music and the words. The Bass is great and the message of the song is even Better if that’s possible. “Can Hear The Angels Singing/(andeverandeverand…)” is another bluegrass banjo filled song. It has a great piano beginning and the vocals are good too. “Be Lifted” recorded live from Kansas w/Robbie Seay Band and Shane & Shane. The song opens with a wonderful violin solo and then the magic of live performance begins. Stellar percussion and Amasing vocals are just a few pluses to this revamp. “I Saw The Light” another live and another great. Also recorded in Kansas along with RSB and S&S this Bluegrass Beauty is full of pep and jump, it almost just makes you want to get up and square dance. Full of fun and just Bursting with Beat. The only problem with this piece of genius is that you want more, but then for this great price what more can ya ask for! The music is the best and the vocals are most definitely up to par. Trust me you won’t be disappointed at all…unless of course you don’t buy it!!! 5 out of 5 stars
