Once enlightened by the “notebook method,” a teacher will often be inspired to go the extra mile to use it. Leaving the history workbook on the shelf, she leads her children to carefully create their own books. Each notebook of drawings and writing becomes a record of the student’s knowledge---a knowledge that is personal and retentive. To make his own page (rather than fill in another’s) uses his brain more expansively. An excellent resource for the keeper of such a notebook is Draw and Write Through History. Opening the pages of the Middle Ages volume, you’ll see step-by-step colored-pencil demonstrations on how to draw a stone castle, an archer, a princess, a knight in armor, a catapult, a green dragon, a falcon, and more. A sample page of writing (in cursive) gives an overview of the time period and can be used for copywork. But the majority of a student’s notebook writing needs to come from the narration of his schoolbooks. Makes an excellent supplement to any history curriculum or unit study! For ages 8 and up. Approx. 62 pages each, softcovers from CPR Publishing. ---Karen

Reviewed by Stephanie (Southern Tier, NY), October 13, 2009 I was given the opportunity on my blog (thecreativesideofsteph DOT blogspot DOT com) to review Draw and Write Through History: Creation Through Jonah.
Carylee's Draw and Write series is geared for ages 8 and up, but if your younger child is interested in art and drawing, you can certainly adapt! Although this book was out of my daughter's ability, I can't wait until she CAN use it!
The Draw and Write series is the perfect supplement for your homeschooling curriculum. These books would even be wonderful tools for summer break, because drawing is FUN!
The book begins with an introduction from "Professor Doodle" who tells each story and gives the child drawing tips and tricks.
I was sent "Creation Through Jonah," which after Professor Doodle's instruction to review our cursive letters, begins with Day 3 of Creation - plants.
Professor Doodle guides the child, step by step, in drawing realistic plants and trees. He then shows the child how to draw a dinosaur and man. At the end of the section, a page of cursive copywork is given, summarizing the history lesson.
After Creation, and besides the images on the cover, you will find instruction on drawing everything from the ark to mummies to Joseph to Jonah's whale.
I was thoroughly impressed with the entire book. It was fun! The drawings were based on simple stick figures or sketches and then the child is shown how to fill it out, so that his drawing is realistic.
I really wish I'd had something like this when I was in school!
I think when my little boy is ready for school, I'll have to get book four, the Pilgrims, Pirates, and Patriots edition! Aargh!
If you've got a child with an artistic bent (and even if you don't!), I think she would love the Draw and Write Through History books! 5 out of 5 stars
Reviewed by Jennifer @ Quiverfullfamily.com (Canada), October 12, 2009 Creation Through Jonah is the first volume in a four-part series, covering the time from creation of the world (c. 6000-4000 B.C.) through Jonah (a contemporary of the first Olympics c. 760 B.C.) Biblical history is well-covered in this volume, as well as a variety of notable events from world history.
Divided into eight major periods: Creation, Noah’s Ark/Ice Age, The Tower of Babel, Egypt: The Pyramid Age, China, Joseph/Moses, Trojan Horse/David, and Jonah – each features from one to four step-by-step ‘how-to-draw’ art instructions and a cursive copywork passage. Written for children ages 8 and over, it can easily be adapted for younger students. A non-consumable book, the drawings and copywork is designed to be completed outside of the book, making it a rich resource for years to come.
Peggy Dick’s step-by-step instructions are wonderfully easy to follow, with the new segments of each drawing displayed in a lighter brown. Helpful suggestions are given for shading, colouring, etc with full-colour, completed illustrations excuted in coloured pencils included for imitation. Some brief historical information is shared, and the provided copywork example summarizes the historical event from a Christian-worldview. 3.5 out of 5 stars
Reviewed by Jamie Segrist (Saint Joseph, MO), September 23, 2009 This book is harder than some of the others but its supposed to be. This is only our second book and we are impressed. I just don't think my 9 year old is brave enough to try them yet but he is excited to try it after we go through book one! 5 out of 5 stars

Author: Carylee Gressman Located in: Fennimore, WI Submitted: July 18, 2007 Tell us a little about yourself. I am a homeschooling mother of seven. I have
home schooled for 10 years. My oldest is
entering 10th grade and my youngest is 3 months
old. My husband works for a home school art
supply company and we travel across the country
to home-school conferences every spring/summer.
In my "spare time" I love to write, garden,
volunteer at church, and scrapbook.
What was your motivation behind this project? God was definitely my motivation! I have wanted
to write a book since I was ten years old, but I
never knew what to write. Home-school parents
at the conferences we attend would talk about
what type of books that they wished we had....so
we listened and started writing and publishing
them. Some encouraging friends, a lot of
prayer, and two years later, here we are!
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? I hope that this series of books will help make
history more memorable for both children and
their parents. I also hope that it will give
children a sense of accomplishment and
confidence in their artwork.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? I have always been a huge fan of C.S. Lewis.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: More books will be coming out in this series.
So keep watching! We plan to keep going up the
time line with books on the vikings, Middle Ages
and Renaissance and American History.
