Does God exist? What's God like? What difference does it make? Dr. Timothy Johnson---scientist, journalist, and Christian---embarks on a deeply personal journey. Join him as he reflects on God the Creator, explores the significance of Jesus, and shares how his faith has shaped his career as a physician and ABC News medical editor. 216 pages, hardcover from InterVarsity.
It is always interesting when a public figure like Johnson, medical editor for
ABC News and frequent medical journalist on shows like Nightline and 20/20,
writes about faith from a personal angle. The initial chapter relates much of
his life story, outlining the questions that have caused him to question and
doubt. The remainder of the book is a pithy discussion of what he has
discovered (and what he still doubts) about issues like the origin of the
universe, proofs for the existence of God, the identity and teachings of Jesus
and the practical difference that religion should make in people's lives.
While peppered with gently humorous asides and personal observations, the
overall focus of the book is not on Johnson himself but on the questions he
explores. Most notable is his excellent discussion of the "intelligent design"
arguments that have recently become so widely discussed in academic settings.
His brief and very comprehensible discussion will introduce a much wider
audience to these ideas. In discussing his faith, Johnson is honest enough to
surprise many readers. As he himself states, "some who admire my secular
achievements will be turned off by this spiritual exploration and some who
admire my spiritual stance will be disappointed in my conclusions." Although
some readers may disagree with Johnson, they will find it difficult not to be
stimulated to think much more deeply about their own answers to these
questions. (May 18) Forecast: A $75,000 promo budget and endorsements from the

This is a rambling, uninteresting story about Dr. Timothy Johnson. He seems to set himself up as the final arbitor of what is Divine and what is True. It could prove very confusing to someone seeking to know God, as it expounds on reason and not on faith, with mostly secular conclusions.

Excellent book! For the thinking person, not the ultra-fundamentalist. Christians need to educate themselves on the things covered in this book and they would be much more effective for Christ.

As a relatively recent Born Again, I thoroughly enjoyed Dr. Johnson's journey. It's a great intellectual discussion that will inspire a great deal more discussion and probably some debate. Isn't that something God wants from us?

I found this book well worth the read and very well written. Dr. Johnson has always been a trusted person to watch on television with his medical commentary. Now this book gives one a spiritual commentary if you will. His book is full awesome information from the beginning chapters on our earth, the universe, and the human body (which are mind boggling!) to his later chapters on his personal journey into his faith and beliefs and presentation of God and the Christian life. Captivating, inspiring and a book one could share with a person searching for the meaning of life or the existance of God! The opening chapters are worth the price...which is a good one!

I have a great respect for Dr. Johnson having watched him on TV over the years. While I disagree with his theology,in some areas, I do believe with him that science can be helpful in helping one "find God" so to speak. God is very anxious to reveal Himself to us--in nature, in science and especially in His Word, the Bible-- if we would just listen. This book shows Dr. Johnson's personal journey and because of that I can recommend it to others.
