You wouldn't expect Abraham to fathom Watergate, or Paul to understand how fax machines work. Similarly, contemporary Bible readers often stumble over obscure and obsolete references from ancient times. With this valuable resource, you'll grasp biblical authors' original concerns. Old and New Testament volumes provide historical, social, and cultural contexts in a handy verse-by-verse format. 800 pages each, two hardcovers.

This set was used in my first year of Seminary and in many hermeneutics classes. I would recommend this to anyone who is serious about the Bible. It will add more detail and bring to life many of the customs and historical references needed for further study. This is of course only 1 of many sets out there. For what you get and the price paid, highly worth it and a great set for anyone wanting to add to their studies. If you find yourself on the fence, let me help you, buy this set!

The IVP Bible Background Commentaries are a great companion to studying Scripture. Concise and surprisingly detailed for single volume commentaries. Contains some very informative and intriguing background information that helps the reader to glean a better understanding of passages of Scripture in light of biblical history, customs and practices relevant to the day. This set probably won't be regarded as being one of the best of the best when compared against other larger more expensive commentaries and Bible dictionaries, but it is well worth its price and is certainly one of the best single volume sets available! I was surprised and pleased and would recommend them to anyone who is a sincere student of the Word. Good stuff!
