Mary Had a Baby is a four-week Advent study based on four African American spirituals. Each session provides the historical background of the spiritual being studied, a devotional for use during the session, and activities designed to prepare group members for the coming season of Christmas. This leader's guide gives you: teaching and learning guidelines/ a key Bible verse for each session/ suggestions for creating the group setting/ topics for discussion/ and directions for using the music on the included audio CD. The four spirituals included in the study are: Mary Had a Baby/ Rise Up Shepherd and Follow/ Children, Go Where I Send You/ Go, Tell It on the Mountain.

A session of Mary Had a Baby might go something like this: The group listens to the music and interacts in some form of activity, such as dance, singing, or role-playing. The group then reads the Scripture passage and historical context of the Spiritual. Next, there is discussion and interaction based on the biblical, historical, and spiritual themes of the words and music. Participants can reflect on the culture, art, spirituality, history, and contemporary meaning of the Spirituals.

This Leader's Guide contains suggested activities, liturgical movement guide, and questions for further discussion. Includes a music CD of all four songs.
