Product Description

Who says that Calvin never wrote a manual on spirituality? This mini-classic sums up a number of the themes from his larger Institutes (obedience, self-denial, the significance of the cross), emphasizing an everyday piety rather than a contemplative, ascetic otherworldliness. 96 pages, softcover. Baker.

I read this small book over Christmas. Expecting another cheesy book of discipleship, as popular today, I was pleasantly surprised! Calvin shows a rare, yet needed, emphasis on the 'inner' life of a follower of Christ. Each of the five chapters deal with vital issues of our hearts that affect lives of holiness. His brief discussion on humility, in my opinion, is the gem of the book where he provides very practical means of self-denial. I recommend this book very highly with the counsel to read it slowly as a daily devotional, BUT with a warning: it could profoundly challenge your life!

In John Calvin’s book, the Golden Booklet of the True Christian Life, he sets out to give instruction as to how a Christian should live his or her life so as to be in obedience to Christ. This book is laid out in a devotional like manner and has “purposely been written in a simpler style…(pg 10)” than some of Calvin’s other works. The book has been laid out into five major sections: the first dealing with humility, then self-denial, patience, hopefulness, and lastly a proper appreciation for earthly things. Before the opening chapter, Calvin has a prayer to “Almighty God,” and in this prayer one can catch a glimpse of the theme of the entire book; “that we may put ourselves so under thy rule that we may go to meet death in full confidence of thy assistance and without fear (pg. 13).” If you want to read more go to http://www.pchasesears.com/bookreview/default.asp?id=4
