    Buttermilk Sky**** by Jan Watson

19 year old Mazy Pelfrey leaves her home in 1913's rural Kentucky to the big city of Lexington to attend secretarial school. She attends school with Polly, Ernestine, Eva and Clara, who also board in the same boarding house she does. It is hard to fit in with this group of friends at times, especially Eva who makes fun of her and often turns her nose up at Mazy. School is a lot harder than Mazy thought it would be and she has to work extra hard in her classes. Mazy becomes very ill and is put on bed-rest for a week at the doctor's home. Her doctor hires a young girl, Cinnamon Spicer, to care for her during the day. Mazy had seen Cinnamon before wondering the streets with tattered clothes, her friends always made fun of the poor girl. But as Cinnamon cares for Mazy, she learns that Cinnamon does odd jobs to care for her ill father and they become friends.

Sheriff Chanis Clay has been in love with Mazy for many years and buys an old house and fixes it up for the futurea future he hopes includes Mazy as his wife. However, Mazy meets a charming wealthy gentleman, Loyal Chambers, who is looking for a bride and sets his path on Mazy. Mazy overhears something that opens her eyes to the true reason he is looking for a bride and makes her reevaluate her plans and goals. What does God want her to do? Is her future with Loyal or with Chanis? Chanis must make some decisions of his own and decides to step aside if Loyal is who Mazy wants. He now feels that God is leading him in a different direction from being a sheriff.

Buttermilk Sky is a heartwarming story with characters that face very real problems and challenges as we face. They learn life doesn't always go as planned and must make new choices. Drama, surprising turns in the story, romance, love and a strong Christian faith are woven throughout the story. I truly enjoyed Cinnamon.

I have enjoyed every book that Jan Watson has written. I don't know how I happened to read the very first book, but have eagerly watched for every new book that she writes. Many of the stories take place in the Kentucky back country, and follows the lives of "Copper" and her family. They all have great exciting stories, including love, and sometimes tragedy. I reccommend Jan Watson books to all my reader friends. If you read one of her books, I'm sure you will be anxious to read the next one.

Mazy Pelfrey is a young 19-year-old woman, attending secretarial school in Lexington, Kentucky in the year 1913. Back home in the mountains of Kentucky where she was raised, she was kind of expected to marry Chanis Clay and have a family. She likes Chanis, but she doesnt like the pressure she thinks he puts on her. Mazy isnt so sure that is what she wants, so she heads off to learn how to be a secretary. She has a group that she socializes with, but for the most part they dont treat her very nicely. She craves the approval of one of the group especially, a snobby uppity girl. Otherwise, Mazy seems to make friends of everyone else she meets with her kind and compassionate nature. While in Lexington, she meets Loyal Chambers, who turns her head by his nice manners and good looks. What should she do about Chanis?

Chanis Clay is the local sheriff, the youngest one in the towns history. He has been busy fixing up the house he bought about a year ago. He sets his house up as he thinks Mazy would like it, assuming she will agree to be his wife when she is done with her secretarial training. He sees Mazy as his girlfriend, but she has only promised friendship. He comes to visit her in Lexington and all the girls she hangs out with think he is handsome and in love with Mazy. Mazy and Chanis both come to the point where they each have to make a choice for the future path of their lives.

This is a very easy to read story. There isnt a lot of action or suspense or much climax to the story. The two main characters learn to wait on Gods timing for their lives through their individual experiences of trying to push forward their own agenda. Some of the characters dont stand out and are a bit flat/dull. The two main characters do demonstrate their Christian values in their kind and compassionate actions towards others. This isnt a terrible book, but it isnt a great one either. Therefore, I rated it as average with three stars.

Jan Watson brings us a historical romance set in Kentucky during the early 1900's. She easily brings us both well developed characters and a great storyline. Her wonderful use of imagery brings the life and times to the reader. It will pull you and keep you reading. I felt so sorry for Mazy Pelfrey because I could see that she wanted her life to be so much more. She was just a sheltered young woman and had to learn her lessons the hard way, by trial and error. This was a wonderful read and I would recommend it to anyone. I received this book from Tyndale via the Book Club for an honest review as stated above.

Buttermilk Sky by Jan Watson, 2014

Mazy Pelfrey, Dr. Lilly Still's younger sister, has left her beloved Kentucky mountains to go to Lexington to secretarial school. Branching out, she expects to find a new venture far beyond her hills. Staying at Mrs. Pearl's boardinghouse, she rooms with other young ladies attending the school; Polly, Ernestine, Eva, and Clara. Excited to be included, Mazy likes having lunch and study group with these new friends.

Back home, Mazy's long time friend, Sheriff Chanis Clay, is fixing up a house with the intent of having Mazy be pleased when she returns in hopes she will marry him. Mazy, in the city meets new people and isn't thinking about those back home, including her friend Chanis. Chanis visits the city and doesn't seem to fit in her new surroundings.

My favorite character is Cinnamon Spicer, a little girl who takes jobs here and there to take care of her ill father. She is industrious and a worthwhile friend. In the beginning Mazy is embarrassed by her, while trying to fit in with her new friends. She finds that outward appearances aren't always what they seem.

I enjoy Jan Watson's stories of hope and caring as her characters find honesty and being themselves win out. Buttermilk Sky allows Mazy to find out who she is and what she values most. I look forward to future adventures from this favorite author.

I loved reading all of Jan Watson's stories, and now a new one!! Buttermilk Sky. In chronological order: Troublesome Creek, Willow Springs, Torrent Falls, Sweetwater Run, Still House Pond, Skip Rock Shallows, Tattler's Branch. Visit Jan's website for more information.
