Publisher's Description

Jolissa Montoya believes God is calling her to work with the disadvantaged children in her inner-city neighborhood. There’s only one problem: The children wouldn’t be able to understand her. Jolissa suffers from a speech impediment and has a thick accent because Spanish is her first language. Ridiculed through much of her youth, she is quite shy and reticent to speak. She is convinced that what God has spoken to her heart is impossible. Impossible, that is, until one day when her confidante shows her a quilt—a quilt that depicts the life of a courageous woman. Can another woman’s courage move her to try the impossible and step out and follow God wherever He leads her? The Singing Quilt is set against the backdrop of the life of Fanny Crosby, who in addition to writing hundreds of songs was also a well-known public speaker and active in Christian rescue missions despite her disability. Readers will be inspired not to let fear or a disability prevent them from answering what they think is God’s impossible call. The Singing Quilt is the third book in the contemporary fiction “Quilt” series written by award-winning author Kathi Macias. The series focuses on various social issues, including racial and pro-life issues. Supplemental online book club materials will be available at NewHopeDigital.com.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Singing Quilt by Kathi Macias. It's easy to read and I couldn't put it down. Kathi masterfully weaves a story of our main character, Jolissa, who is going through life with the problems she feels alone in dealing with. She meets and becomes friends with a kind, godly woman who begins to share bits and pieces of the life of Fanny Crosby through the patches of the singing quilt. The stories of Jolissa, and Fanny Crosby, who wrote thousands of hymns and poems, are artfully blended together as they each learn to depend on God. I loved this book!

Kathi's books make you really care for the characters. The quilt series can be read in any order as they are each a stand-alone book. Once you read one, you will want to read all three!

Kathy Macias is a prolific writer who's written 35 books at the time of this writing. Her first successful series was the "Matthews"series of mystery novels. I asked her why she chose to write The Quilt Series. She said that she'd been working on books that on heavy topics (Red Ink among others) and wanted to write something a bit "softer." The Quilt Series is based on the stories of three strong women: Elizabeth Blackwell, M.D., Harriett Tubman, and Fanny Crosby. The Doctor's Christmas Quilt focuses on the pro-life conflict and is about a doctor who is very pro-life whose daughter becomes pregnant out of wedlock. The Moses Quilt focuses on bridging the racial and generational divides.

The Singing Quilt is based on the backdrop of the life of Fanny Crosby. I knew Ms. Crosby wrote lots of hymns, but did not know that she was the first woman to address the U.S. Senate and was heavily involved in the abolitionist movement --her blindness never impeded her as she went about the Lord's calling on her life. Fanny's courage inspired another young woman -- Jolissa Montoya, a shy, young Hispanic girl, believes God is calling her to work with disadvantaged children in the inner city and is convinced it is impossible until one day she is shown The Singing Quilt. I was convicted yet again that nothing -- lack of knowledge, fear, a disability -- real or perceived -- can keep God from fulfilling His purposes through us if we are willing. You will love Jolissa's story!

I asked Kathy to tell me something that her myriad readers might not know about her -- she said she had written two books with Rosey Grier, one fiction and one non-fiction, but when they went to conferences or events, the press surrounded Rosey and basically ignored Kathy. A sharp media person finally noticed her on one occasion and asked Rosey who she was -- that huge ex-football player said she was his bodyguard!

Kathy has recently accepted the post of Senior Editor for Elk River Publishing -- she said she'd decided to basically "retire" and then this opportunity came along. I'm so happy her talents will still be used to guide aspiring writers through the publishing process.

I was given a copy of The Singing Quilt by New Hope Publishers for my unbiased review.

This third book in Kathi Macias's "Quilt Series" features Jolissa Montoya, a college-age girl with a stuttering problem. She lives with her uncle, who is verbally abusive and demeaning to her. This is the story of how she overcame her disability through an adopted grandma who taught her about Jesus, using a "Singing Quilt" that portrayed the life of Fanny Crosby. Readers will be inspired by this delightful story not to let fear or a disability prevent them from doing what God calls them to do. If we only ask, God will provide a way.

The Singing Quilt is the third book in the Quilt series. However, it is easy to read as a stand-alone. The story is based on a quiet Hispanic girl being raised by her abusive uncle, since her parents death. She meets a special elderly woman on her way home from work who she adopts as her "abuela" grandmother. This adopted grandmother takes her under her wing and shows her a special quilt and explains it meaning. The book is an easy, quick, enjoyable read. I can't wait to go back and read the first two books in the series.

I recieved this book from the Book Club Network in exchange for my honest opinion.

    The Singing Quilt

    By: Kathi Macias

I love this Quilt series. This one is the story of Fanny Crosby. Fanny Crosby has always been one of my favorite speakers and song writers. Kathi did a wonderful job weaving the story into her story and being able to help someone in their life. What a life Fanny Crosby had being blind but she did so much with her life. She wrote hundreds of songs was a great speaker and was also very active in Christian missions. She didn't let her disabilities keep her fro doing what God's calling was for her.

Jolissa believed her calling was working with disadvantaged children. Jolissa has one problem how can she get the point across to the kids when she has a very bad speech problem. She stutters when she talks. The stuttering began after having to live with a mean uncle and how he treated her raising her after her mother died. Jolissa finally makes a friend in a older lady. Eva Pedrosa has a very special quilt each block tells a story. Each block makes Jolissa think of her own life. Can Eva help Jolissa? Will Jolissa follow her calling God has for her?

Another wonderful book by Kathi Macias. There is not a book by Kathi that I would not recommend . All books are God honoring and well searched.
