Normally, I do not like such versions, but the style and layout is easy to follow, and the notes add depth to the verses and chapters. I only wish this was offered in larger type. When I bought it, I knew the type was small and rather gray. As I read my Bible very early in the morning, there are times when the gray, small type is not as clear as 10 point type would be to read. Other than that, I would recommend it to someone who shunned Bible reading "because I can't understand the words."

Am I glad I have added it to my library? YES
Is it the one Study Bible I would want to own? NO
Over the past couple of years that I have been familiar with The Voice translation of the NT and later the OT, I have enjoyed having it available. When I first heard of the availability of a Study Bible using this translation, I was excited. Now, having it in my hand, I am less excited. Though called a "Study Bible" its contents more closely parallel those of a Devotional Bible - but it does not quite reach the best of those standards either.
There is no clearly stated purpose for this new Study Bible - it is a collection of notes, but nothing of the quality or depth I would expect of a good Study Bible or Devotional Bible. The preface and introductory remarks appear to be written for the translation, not for this edition of the Study Bible. There are considerable more notes per page in the New Testament than in the Old Testament - perhaps echoing the interest of too many 21st century believers, but not that of a book claiming in its entirety to be the Word of God.
Though designed by artists, this Study Bible has done a remarkably poor job of clearly distinguishing the Bible text from its notes. Though they have used different fonts, the density of those fonts and their placement on the page (in the body of the page, rather than as footnotes, indented text, or highlighted text) made it difficult to immediately tell where I was in the text - was I reading the Bible or the notes. This distinction is important given the informal nature of the translation. A second look was necessary to know what I was reading at the time.
The variety of indexes included as part of this edition does add considerable value to the book:
* Road Map To God's Promises
* A 40-Day Retreat With Jesus
* 365 Days Through The Whole Bible
* Topical Guide To The Notes
* Topical Guide To The Scripture
* Maps (Black and White)
* Index To In-Text Maps
I am looking forward to weaving several of these into my personal study and ministry.
When picking up a Bible with notes, I would like to have seen more meat - either in helping to understand the Bible text or applying it to my life. There is value here - just not as much as I would have liked to have seen in a new Study Bible or Devotional Bible. The book is recommended for the new Christian - perhaps one with an artistic heart (either in musical, dramatic, or the visual arts). It would also serve a long time believer looking for a way of understanding and seeing the scripture. I would find it more difficult to recommend this Bible to the scholar or pastor looking to augment his or her study and understanding of the scriptures.

The Study Bible for
Navigating Your Life
I love Bibles and I love to see what is new I don't mean in changing of word in scripture =just in something that maybe they put on a side bar ,new maps or notes that catch my eye. Something that may help ,e understand scripture better or makes it an easier read. Hope I explained it correctly so no one is confused.
The Compass is the study Bible that compliments the Voice Bible translation (which I also have and love it) I got 2 extra, one for my grandson and one for my friends= I felt it was an easier read for someone that never read the Bible to help bring them closer or at least introduce them to our Lord and Savior.
The Lord does provide easier ways to help those that are lost to try to bring them to him.
This Bible is a great study tool and also one if you choose to read the Bible in 365 days. This beautiful Bible also has these:
< A road map of God's promise. Very nice touch.
< It has 40 Day Retreat with Jesus
< Topical Guide to The Notes
< Topical Guide to The Scriptures
< Indext to In-Text Maps I would have perfered colored but do to cost I am sure that is why they are Black and White.
Beautiful Bible none the less and I love this bible. I love to review Bibles they are ever enough Bibles. I just ordered me a new one can't wait to get it in the mail.
I received this beautiful Bible from Booksneeze for an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review just honest review. The opinions I have expressed are entirely my own and no one else's.
dgreegorMIAge: 25-34Gender: male5 Stars Out Of 5A Bible That Reads Like a Movie ScriptJanuary 30, 2014dgreegorMIAge: 25-34Gender: maleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5*I received this complimentary Bible in exchange for my honest review from Thomas Nelson*
The Compass Bible is an interesting translation in that it seeks to make reading the Bible easier. Unlike most Bibles that read like a story, this Bible reads more like a movie script. For example, if I was in a theater production and was learning my lines my script may look like this:
Me: blah blah blah
Driver: yea yea yea
Me: uh huh
Driver: yep yep yep
This Bible reads like that. It makes it much easier to read as the reader knows who is speaking. By the same token, the notes read more like a director's instruction to set the stage. They are not an interference at all but do well to enhance what is happening.
The translation itself is quite modern but not so modern as to be disrespectful. I found the translation to be very descriptive and vivid which I feel can be lost in some other translations.
Another benefit is that, while the Bible is not light, the typeface ideally set. It is not too small but not so large either. Also, the notes are set apart so it is easy to continue reading the text once the note(s) has/have been read.
As to a study Bible, it does okay. The notes give insight but for those that desire a very deep study, I would not use this Bible as a primary study Bible. It has its moments but does lack some features like cross references and concordance. All in all, a very nice Bible for those that like to read the Bible as a story.
BrendaWVAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Unique but easy to use study BibleNovember 17, 2013BrendaWVAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The Compass Study Bible is truly an easy Bible to read and use. Different on more than a few levels, the first thing that got me excited was that it was written using the Voice translation, which really allows the characters to really jump from the pages of the Bible. The book that I focused on was the book of Ruth, which happens to be my favorite book in the Bible. The way the Compass is written, which is really like a screenplay, really made me feel as if I had stepped into the life of Ruth and Naomi. Another unique feature is the fact that I found the study notes peppered thru the scripture instead of at the bottom of each page like most study Bible's I use.
There are several features included in this Bible and the first thing you will find when you open the cover is a table of contents. I do miss that there isn't a page for presentation, because I always like to use them whenever I gift a Bible. The features that I found most useful were The Road Map to God's Promises, and is just what it says, it steers the user to the many promises from God. There is a break between the Old and New Testaments where I found "The New Covenant" and "The Titles of Jesus" two interesting articles that were quite informative. There is also a topical guide to the notes as well as to the Scriptures.There is also a 365 Day reading Guide as well as a guide that will allow you to take a 40-Day retreat with Jesus. Overall I found the Compass to be a different kind of study Bible, one that really brings the scripture to life for me. The way the study notes are presented allows this Bible to flow smoothly for me. I do think this Bible would make a wonderful gift especially if you know someone that might be struggling as they try and understand a traditionally written Bible!
