The
Talmud of Babylonia (a.k.a., the
Bavli, or
Babylonian Talmud), is a sustained commentary on the written and oral law of Israel. Comipiled between 500 and 600 A.D., it offers a magnificent record of how Jewish scholars preserved a humane and enduring civilization. Representing the primary document of rabbinic judaism, it throws considerable light on the New Testament as well.
This monumental English translation (this set does not contain Hebrew or Aramaic text) was compiled nearly a decade ago - but was extraordinarily expensive and difficult to find. Now all 37 Talmudic tractates are available in an affordable 22-volume reprint. Featuring commentary and new introductions by Jacob Neusner (Introduction to Judaism), it also includes the full content on a searchable CD-ROM.

This is a brilliant and accessible translation of the Talmud, however some comment must be made on the electronic version. The use of separate pdf files for each chapter of a given book with no option to go back makes finding the information required on the CD difficult if trying to look up a reference by its folio. I have merged the files into single books, and added folio bookmarks in addition to the chapter book marks, which makes the files far easier to use. This also enables searching for a word throughout an entire book. I would hope that this method would be used in any future copy of the CD.

Mr. Neusner has done such an outstanding job on this set of Talmud`s. They are full of so much information. You do not have to be a scholar to understand them either. If you are really into studying the BIBLE. You need this set.

The 22 volumes are amazing. The translation done by Jacob Neussner is highly good. This work surpasses even the Hebrew language Talmuds in its simplicity but at the same time precision. It would have been interesting if the author had thought about keeping the Hebrew-Aramaic text next to the English translation. I encourage those interested in the Talmudic studies to buy it.

I own The Soncino Talmud on CD sold by Davka. After receiving this version I was in shock trying to look up references. As I adjust to the Hendrickson Publishers set, I appreciate the CD and especially the printed volumes more and more. If you wish to read or better yet, study the Talmud, purchase this set. Perhaps I will wish to return to my review and rate it higher.
