In this increasingly pluralistic age, it's vital that Christians equip themselves to understand competing worldviews. Sire's thorough, easy-to-understand introduction can help. His clear non-technical explanations of Christian theism, deism, naturalism, nihilism, existentialism, Eastern pantheistic monism, New Age philosophy, and postmodernism will guide young believers in defending their faith against other belief systems vying for their minds and hearts. 259 pages, softcover from InterVarsity.

I bought some of these for a class I teach. I have used this book to introduce worldview in church classes to people as young as 15 up to people in their 40's. All of them understand it and all learn from it. Comments from students mirror my own after reading it for the first time- that they find elements in their own way of thinking about the world that are incompatible with Christianity and are changing their thinking. I have seen nothing better than The Universe Next Door for teaching people to examine their own worldviews and clearly understand where their own thinking originates and make adjustments so that their actions and attitudes reflect their doctrines. Highly reccomended.

"The Universe Next Door",is one of the best works on points of view in Western Civilization. Why do you believe what you say you believe? Now I know what has happened to Western society, and why it isn't what it used to be.This book answers the questions why people believe what they believe. Its all about volition, but Sire tells it like it is. "Scripture Twisting", explaines that when one takes The Bible out of context one turns it into a pretext. Both works are a must have for the one who wants to have the right answers.

Sire provides here a good basic summary of a number of worldviews. The reader should realize at the start that this author is writing from a Christian theism worldview, and all his comments regarding other worldviews will be colored accordingly. That point being made, he does a very good job here giving Christian theists a better understanding of the competing worldviews around them. This title is well-worth the purchase price.
