Star Wars is one of the most beloved movie series of all time, and in this book John McDowell explores the many spiritual themes that weave throughout the six films. From the Force to the dark side, there is a moral and spiritual complexity to the films that, if paid attention to, can help us better understand our place in the world and our relation to others and to God. George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, did not intend for his films to be mere entertainment, McDowell argues. Rather, he hoped his films would be used as a vehicle for moral education.
I've seen all the films many times, but don't claim to be a "Star Wars" expert, so I can't vouch for every detail in John C. McDowell's book.
Nevertheless, "Star Wars" is an obvious target for a "Gospel According to ..." volume because of countless references to mythic tales throughout the six movies. This is an analysis of the movies, by the way, and doesn't branch out to consider the extensive series of Star Wars novels and other media that have expanded the saga.
Unlike some of the other "Gospel According to ..." volumes, this one pretty much touches on predictable themes, including chapters with titles such as "Beware the Dark Star Within" and "Rebelling Against Evil."
All of the books in this series are fun with groups and, in this case, the array of films is short enough that a season-long class could be built around screenings of the six films and discussions shaped by the book.

Reviewed by Val C (Centennial, CO), September 12, 2009 The Gospel According to Star Wars is written by a theologian and contains many cross references to scripture. It is thoroughly researched with references that include secular sources. This book is not a light read like sitting down to enjoy a novel. It is very thought provoking and as I have read each chapter I have seen a little bit of me in each character. Many snicker at the Sci-Fi genre as just being entertainment but this book shows with introspection we can learn in a different way. I would recommend this book to any one that wants to take a deeper look into the Star Wars saga. Write a review of The Gospel According to Star Wars: Faith, Hope and the Force
