Product Description

Lula Bowman has finally achieved her dream: a teaching position and a scholarship to continue her college education in mathematics. But when she receives a shocking telephone call from her sister, Jewel, everything she's worked for begins to crumble.

After the sudden death of Jewel's husband, Jewel needs Lula's help. With a heavy heart, Lula returns to her Oklahoma hometown to do right by her sister. But the only teaching job available in Dunn is combination music instructor/basketball coach. Neither subject belongs anywhere near the halls of academia, according to Lula!

Lula commits to covering the job for the rest of the school year, determined to do well and prove herself to the town. Reluctantly, she turns to the boys' coach, Chet, to learn the game of basketball. Chet is handsome and single, but Lula has no plans to fall for a local boy. She's returning to college as soon as she gets Jewel back on her feet.

Lula doesnt know what her future holds now that she was taken from her goal in life, college, to help her sister in need. Lula wants to prove to everyone that she has grown up. Chet knows what he wants from his future, but is struggling to deal with his own family issue. I enjoyed how the author takes a unique subject women basketball at the turn of the century and weaves a story around that and a town affected by the war. She makes you feel with the characters and their struggles with emotions, hardships and the coping with changes the war overseas brings to a small town. Two people who discover throughout the story that they might have feelings for each other and what that brings. It was very entertaining and interesting reading the historical content regarding how basketball was around that time and how the women got into it and could play. I love the part music plays in it all, also. A very action-filled tale with romance, danger and lots of changes to accept.

I received this book from bookfun.org for an honest review.

Anne Mateer does an excellent job of writing in this novel set during World War II. Lula leaves her position teaching college mathematics and a scholarship towards her PhD to care for her recently widowed pregnant sister and her children. To support all of them, she takes the only available position as music teacher and girls basketball coach in the local high school. Lula has never seen a basketball game and considers music frivolous.

Chet, the boys basketball coach, has stayed home from the military to care for his widowed mother when his brother enlisted in the army. His mother is unappreciative and lets him know that he should have served rather than his brother.

Lula has to decide if her goal of being the first female PhD in the state of Oklahoma is her own desire and Gods will for her life or if she is fulfilling her fathers dream for her.

I highly recommend this book showing life in the early 1940s.

I was given this book by www.bookfun.org in exchange for my honest opinion.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Playing by Heart by Anne Mateer. It is a story about how Lula Bowman moves home to help her sister during WWI. She takes a job as a music teacher at the local school and coaches the girls' basketball team. The only problem is that she knows nothing about basketball and there are no YouTube videos available to help her, only a small brochure to teach her the game. Math teacher and boys' basketball coach Chet Vaughn, offers to help her. The story alternates between the two characters point of view.

Playing by Heart is a sweet story with so many wonderful themes. It speaks to laying down your dreams to God and asking the Lord to give you new dreams, of the power of forgiveness and how unforgiveness leads to bitterness, and allowing the Lord to show you who you are in Him. The characters are developed nicely and Lula Bowman character speaks to your heart.

I give the book 5 stars and highly encourage you to read it!

Miss Lula Bowman is the first female winner of the Donally Mathematics Award, which provides her with an income as a college lecturer, and the ability to further pursue her studies and become the first female PhD in the state. But her plans go awry when her brother-in-law dies, leaving her sister with four children and no way to support herself. Lulu is offered a job teaching high school musicwhich she can doand coaching the girls basketball teamwhich she has no idea about.

Chet Vaughn is the school mathematics teacher, and coach of the boys basketball team. He has been hounded by previous husband-hunting music teachers, so is determined to keep this new female at arms length until he meets Lula Bowman, who is determined to keep well away from him, and to leave town as soon as she can.

The story was written in first person, with chapters alternating between Lulu and Chets points of view. This made it pretty obvious what the end result was going to be (a little surprise would have been nice), and I occasionally had to backtrack to remind myself who the viewpoint character wasit took a while before I was able to tell the difference. My other issue was that it took a while for me to tell when the story was set (World War One), which didnt help my initial confusion.

However, once I worked out who and when, I found myself in the middle of an interesting story. I always admire intelligent characters, and Lulu was no exception, especially as the story progressed and we gradually found out more about her history and why she was so determined to escape her hometown and pursue her academic career.

I also found Playing by Heart had some interesting observations to make about parental expectation. Lulas mother had encouraged her musical talent, while her father encouraged her ability to understand complex mathematical problems (I suspect these gifts are two sides of the same coin). Its an important lesson we all have to learn, that we need to discover who we are in God, not simply to meet the expectations of those around us. A solid read, recommended for historical romance fans who like something a little different.
