Author/Artist Review

Author: Horace E. Allen
Submitted: June 05, 2006

Tell us a little about yourself.  I am married for 41 years with a son and a daughter. I have been a pastor of a church in Brooklyn, NY for 31 years. I was the first to start a Christian counseling practice in the L.I., Nassau County area 27 years ago. I have been teaching, on and off, in Seminaries in the New York area for 17 years. I have done quite a bit of seminars, workshops, and conferences.

What was your motivation behind this project?  When I started counseling 27 years ago, the only training programs around were from secular colleges and universitis. A Christian would then try to integrate his secular theories in counseling and psychology with his biblical knowledge. Of course since then, Christian counseling has become a major part of Seminary training. Not with standing, much of the major theories used in the Semiaries are still secular. As a pioneer, in trying to work through the issues, I discovered that the basic premise of secular counseling theories, man being and end in himself and he is only accountable to his society and not to any higher power, namely God, was the root of the problem. I thought through and apply the principle of our accountability to God and that the place from which all issues flow is the heart and that until the heart is changed there can be no real change in man's behaivor. I then began to feel the need to develop this theory and explained its process. I made several attempts to put it in writing over period of fifteen years. Finally, I believed that the Lord's time for this work had come. I set myself a goal of twelve months, in which time the first draft was completed. I want as many people as possible to have an opportunity to read this work and to learn how much more they can grow in their spiritual life.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  It is my hope that readers of this work will understand that there are issues that they brought with them into their spiritual life which are hindering their spiritual growth and emotional maturity. Though positional we are perfect in Christ at the moment of salvation, practically we are a work in progress. God's divine Spirit desires to take us through the process of sanctification. Because of the issues we keep stumbling over, spiritual growth is often a frustrating experience, back and forth, effort. Thinking with the Heart recognizes these issues, show how they developed and why they are so tenacious and gives clearly principles in working with the Holy Spirit to bring resolution for spiritual growth to happen.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  I enjoy reading works with sustance from such writers as Dr. Donald Grey Barnhouse, C. S. Lweis, Francis Schaeffer, R.C. Sproul, etc.
